Questa mattina, il Santo Padre Francesco ha ricevuto in Udienza il Presidente della Repubblica del Libano, S.E. il Sig. Michel Aoun, il quale si è successivamente incontrato con l’Em.mo Cardinale Pietro Parolin, Segretario di Stato, accompagnato da S.E. Mons. Paul Richard Gallagher, Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati.

Nel corso dei cordiali colloqui in Segreteria di Stato, si è sottolineata l’importanza delle buone relazioni diplomatiche che intercorrono tra la Santa Sede e il Libano, delle quali quest’anno ricorre il 75° anniversario. Ci si è poi soffermati sulle gravi problematiche socio-economiche che il Paese sta vivendo e sulla situazione dei rifugiati, auspicando che l’aiuto della Comunità internazionale, le prossime elezioni legislative e le riforme necessarie possano contribuire a rafforzare la coesistenza pacifica tra le varie confessioni religiose che vivono nel Paese dei Cedri.

Inoltre, sono state menzionate le conseguenze disastrose dell’esplosione del Porto di Beirut avvenuta il 4 agosto 2020, facendo riferimento alla richiesta di giustizia e verità manifestata dalle famiglie delle vittime.

This morning, the Holy Father Francis received in audience the President of the Republic of Lebanon, His Excellency Mr. Michel Aoun, who subsequently met with His Eminence Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, accompanied by His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.

During the cordial discussions in the Secretariat of State, the importance of the good diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Lebanon, which reach their seventy-fifth anniversary this year, was highlighted. Attention then turned to the grave socio-economic problems the country is experiencing, and the situation of refugees, in the hope that the aid of the international community, the upcoming legislative elections and the necessary reforms may contribute to strengthening peaceful co-existence between the various religious confessions that live in the Land of the Cedars.

Finally, the disastrous consequences of the explosion at the Port of Beirut on 4 August 2020 were mentioned, with reference to the demand for justice and truth expressed by the families of the victims.
