Eccellenza Reverendissima,
Il cammino quaresimale che stiamo percorrendo ci invita ad alzare lo sguardo verso la meta: siamo chiamati a seguire Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo fin sul Golgota e poi a discendere con Lui nel Sepolcro; infine a sperimentare la potenza sempre nuova e vivificante della Sua Risurrezione. I Luoghi Santi della nostra fede sono la testimonianza tangibile di questo straordinario avvenimento che ha cambiato la storia dell’umanità e l’ha aperta a una speranza nuova.
Da quei luoghi, l’annuncio della Pasqua si è sparso in tutto il mondo e continua a diffondersi. In quelle regioni, ininterrottamente lungo i secoli, anche a costo di grandi sacrifici e del martirio, ha continuato ad essere presente una comunità cristiana col volto universale della Pentecoste.
Il senso di comunione in Cristo morto e risorto per noi, ci spinge a promuovere anche quest’anno l’importante iniziativa della Collecta Pro Terra Sancta, per il legame di fraternità che unisce la Chiesa Universale alla Chiesa Madre di Gerusalemme. Il Santo Padre, in occasione dell’Assemblea della Riunione delle Opere di Aiuto per le Chiese Orientali (ROACO) il 16 giugno 2016, mentre si riferiva ai lavori di restauro in corso della Basilica della Natività a Betlemme e dell’Edicola del Santo Sepolcro a Gerusalemme, ha ricordato il valore non solo della presenza della Chiesa in Terra Santa ma anche del “mantenimento dei Luoghi Santi e dei Santuari, anche grazie alla Colletta del Venerdì Santo che ogni anno si rinnova, a partire dalla felice intuizione del beato Paolo VI”. Grazie alla generosa offerta di tanti, cattolici e non, i lavori di restauro dei due siti, patrimonio comune della Cristianità, stanno procedendo con notevoli risultati.
Vivere oggi la fede cristiana in Medio Oriente, lo sappiamo, non è affatto facile. Non lo è specialmente in Iraq, in Siria e in Egitto, dove le comunità cristiane hanno fatto esperienza dell’ecumenismo del sangue e dove i singoli fedeli devono lottare ogni giorno contro la tentazione di abbandonare la propria terra o addirittura la propria fede. Non lo è nemmeno negli altri Paesi della Regione, dove spesso i cristiani si trovano sottoposti a forme di oppressione e di discriminazione che minano giorno dopo giorno le loro condizioni di vita.
Tenere viva la speranza in questi contesti è davvero difficile ed è al tempo stesso importantissimo. La piccola presenza cristiana in Medio Oriente ha perciò bisogno di sentire il sostegno e la vicinanza di tutta la Chiesa. Un sostegno che è fatto di preghiera costante per loro. Un sostegno che è fatto anche di aiuto economico concreto, tenendo conto di quanto già san Paolo scriveva in occasione della prima colletta per Gerusalemme: “Ciascuno dia secondo quanto ha deciso nel suo cuore, non con tristezza né per forza, perché Dio ama chi dona con gioia” (2 Cor. 9,7).
Ancora una volta, grazie alla generosità di tutta la Chiesa, che si fa concreta e si manifesta anche nella Colletta del Venerdì Santo, le comunità cattoliche di Terra Santa, quella latina della Diocesi Patriarcale di Gerusalemme, della Custodia Francescana e delle altre Circoscrizioni, come quelle orientali - greco-melchita, copta, maronita, sira, caldea, armena - con le famiglie religiose e gli organismi di ogni genere, potranno a loro volta aiutare concretamente i poveri e i sofferenti di ogni etnia e di ogni fede, senza distinzione.
Le parrocchie proseguiranno il loro servizio pastorale con attenzione preferenziale per i poveri; le scuole saranno luogo di incontro tra cristiani e musulmani per preparare insieme un futuro di rispetto e di collaborazione; gli ospedali e gli ambulatori, gli ospizi e i centri di ritrovo continueranno ad accogliere i sofferenti e i bisognosi, i profughi e i rifugiati, le persone di ogni età e religione colpite dall’orrore della guerra. Ci interpellano ogni giorno e non possiamo dimenticare i volti di migliaia di bambini e ragazzi di età scolare, scappati dalla violenza e persecuzione in Siria e in Iraq, che sono stati accolti nelle scuole cristiane dei paesi vicini, grazie alla nostra Colletta.
Altro elemento importante che costituisce la vitalità della Chiesa in Terra Santa è il pellegrinaggio, iniziativa da promuovere continuamente. Attraverso il viaggio nei luoghi sacri e sulle orme di Cristo è possibile non solo una rinascita della fede e una riscoperta delle proprie origini, ma è anche un mezzo della nuova evangelizzazione. I pellegrinaggi sono, inoltre, una risorsa essenziale per le popolazioni cristiane di Terra Santa. Secondo recenti statistiche, infatti, almeno il 30% della comunità locale - a Gerusalemme e a Betlemme - vive e opera grazie alla presenza di pellegrini.
In questi giorni di preparazione alla Santa Pasqua rinnoviamo il nostro impegno ad essere artigiani di pace, pregando e operando, affinché la pace abiti nel cuore di ogni persona, specialmente dei nostri fratelli e sorelle di Terra Santa e del Medio Oriente.
A Lei, ai Sacerdoti, ai Consacrati e ai Fedeli, che si adoperano per la buona riuscita della Colletta, ho la gioia di trasmettere la viva riconoscenza del Santo Padre Francesco, insieme alla gratitudine della Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali. E mentre invoco sulla sua persona e sul suo ministero pastorale e su tutti i fedeli della sua giurisdizione copiose benedizioni divine, porgo un felice augurio di Buona Pasqua e il più fraterno saluto nel Signore Gesù.

Your Excellency,
The Lenten Journey, which we are traveling, invites us to raise our eyes to the goal: we are following Our Lord Jesus Christ first to Golgotha and then, having descended with Him into the tomb, to experience the ever new and life-giving power of His Resurrection. The Holy Places of our faith are eloquent witnesses of this extraordinary event, which has changed the course of history and opened up a new hope for humanity.
From those places, the Easter proclamation has spread throughout the world, and it continues to spread. A Christian community has remained in those regions down through the centuries, even at the cost of great sacrifice and martyrdom. Since the first Pentecost, it has bravely shown the universal face of the Church to the world.
Our sense of communion in the suffering and risen Christ moves us again this year to undertake the important initiative that is the Collection for the Holy Land. Indeed, this effort manifests the bond of brotherhood that unites the universal Church to the Mother Church of Jerusalem, as the Holy Father has indicated. On the occasion of the Assembly of Organizations for Aid to the Oriental Churches (ROACO), on June 16, 2016, while referring to the ongoing restoration of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem and the Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Pope Francis recalled the value, not only of the presence of the Church in the Holy Land, but also of the “[maintenance of] the holy places and shrines, also with the help of the yearly Good Friday Collection providently instituted by Blessed Paul VI”. Thanks to the generosity of so many, including non-Catholics, the restoration of these two sites, which are the common heritage of Christianity, is proceeding with remarkable results.
Today, as we know, living the Christian faith in the Middle East is not at all easy. Especially in Iraq, Syria and Egypt, where Christian communities have experienced an “ecumenism of blood”, individuals are daily pressured to abandon their land, or even their faith. Nor does freedom reign in the other countries of the region, where Christians are often subjected to forms of oppression and discrimination that undermine their living conditions.
Keeping hope alive in such circumstances is both difficult and vitally important. Consequently, the small Christian presence in the Middle East has great need of the support and attention of the entire Church. Constant prayer is the first and greatest assistance they seek. Also required, however, is concrete economic aid, taking into account what St. Paul wrote at the time of the first collection for Jerusalem: “Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Cor. 9:7).
Once again, from every part of the Church, expressions of solidarity come together effectively in the Good Friday Collection. This enables the Catholic communities of the Holy Land - the Latin Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem, the Franciscan Custody and other jurisdictions, especially Eastern ones (Greek-Melkite, Coptic, Maronite, Syrian, Chaldean, Armenian) along with religious communities and organizations of all kinds - to help, in their turn, the poor and suffering of every ethnicity and every faith, without distinction.
Parishes will continue their pastoral service with preferential attention to the poor. Schools will enable Christians and Muslims to prepare together a future of respect and partnership. Hospitals and clinics, hospices and community centers will continue to host the suffering and the needy, refugees and asylum-seekers, people of all ages and religions hit by the horrors of war. The unforgettable faces of thousands of children and teens, fleeing violence and persecution in Syria and Iraq, continue to challenge us, even as these young people, thanks to our Collection, are being welcomed by Christian schools in neighboring countries.
The pilgrimage, which is an important element of the vitality of the Church in the Holy Land, is an initiative always to be promoted. A journey to the Sacred Places in the footsteps of Christ can not only lead the pilgrim to a revival of his faith and a rediscovery of his origins, but it can also serve as a powerful instrument in the New Evangelization. In addition, pilgrimages are an essential resource for the Christian population of the Holy Land. In fact, according to recent statistics, at least 30% of the local community - in Jerusalem and in Bethlehem - live and work thanks to the presence of pilgrims.
As we prepare for Easter, let us renew our commitment to becoming artisans of peace, praying and working that peace may dwell in the heart of every person, especially of our brothers and sisters of the Holy Land and the Middle East.
To You, and to the Priests, Consecrated men and women and to the Faithful, who are helping to insure the success of the Collection, I have the joy of conveying the sincere gratitude of the Holy Father Francis, together with that of the Congregation for Eastern Churches. Finally, as I invoke on behalf of You, Your pastoral ministry and all the faithful of Your jurisdiction abundant divine blessings, I send You wishes for a very Happy Easter and my most fraternal greetings in the Lord Jesus.

La Colletta “pro Terra Sancta”
CONGREGAZIONE PER LE CHIESE ORIENTALI
Anno 2015-2016
Introduzione
La “Colletta per la Terra Santa” nasce dalla volontà dei Papi di mantenere forte il legame tra tutti i Cristiani del mondo e i Luoghi Santi. La Colletta, che tradizionalmente viene raccolta nella giornata del Venerdì Santo, è la fonte principale per il sostentamento della vita che si svolge intorno ai Luoghi Santi; è anche lo strumento che la Chiesa si è data per mettersi a fianco delle comunità ecclesiali del Medio Oriente. Nei tempi più recenti, Papa Paolo VI, attraverso l’Esortazione Apostolica ‘Nobis in Animo’ (25 marzo 1974), diede una spinta decisiva in favore della Terra Santa.
La Custodia attraverso la Colletta può sostenere e portare avanti l’importante missione a cui è chiamata: custodire i Luoghi Santi, le pietre della memoria, e favorire la presenza cristiana, le pietre vive di Terra Santa, attraverso tante attività di solidarietà, come ad esempio il mantenimento delle strutture pastorali, educative, assistenziali, sanitarie e sociali.
I territori che beneficiano sotto diverse forme di un sostegno proveniente dalla Colletta sono i seguenti: Gerusalemme, Palestina, Israele, Giordania, Cipro, Siria, Libano, Egitto, Etiopia, Eritrea, Turchia, Iran e Iraq.
Di norma, la Custodia di Terra Santa riceve la parte maggiore della Colletta, mentre ciò che rimane alla Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali serve per la formazione dei candidati al sacerdozio, il sostentamento del clero, l’attività scolastica, la formazione culturale, i sussidi alle diverse circoscrizioni ecclesiastiche in Medio Oriente.

Formazione Accademica, Spirituale e Umana dei Seminaristi e Sacerdoti delle Chiese poste sotto la giurisdizione della Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali
Grazie alla Colletta si può provvedere a devolvere contributi ai seminari, alle case di formazione religiosa e istituzioni culturali nei territori di competenza, sostenendo sotto varie forme (borse di studio, tasse universitarie e ogni altra necessità sanitaria) anche a Roma, giovani seminaristi e sacerdoti, religiosi e religiose e, compatibilmente con i fondi disponibili, alcuni laici. A partire da quest’anno accademico, questo Dicastero ospita in un collegio qui a Roma le religiose che provengono da diversi paesi orientali. Sono circa 300 gli studenti, che beneficiano della borsa di studio, ospiti in 7 collegi di competenza del Dicastero.
Inoltre, il Dicastero contribuisce al sostentamento del Pontificio Istituto Orientale, istituzione accademica superiore con due facoltà, Scienze Ecclesiastiche Orientali e Diritto Canonico Orientale, di cui è Gran Cancelliere il Cardinale Prefetto.

Sussidi per l’attività Scolastica
La Diocesi Patriarcale di Gerusalemme, la Custodia Francescana, le Chiese orientali della Terra Santa e gli Istituti Religiosi sono impegnati per la formazione scolastica dei giovani della Terra Santa. Tenute presenti le particolari circostanze in cui versano gli studenti cristiani e preso in considerazione l’arrivo di migliaia di ragazzi in età scolare dalla Siria e Iraq in Terra Santa, la Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali ha deciso di aumentare la somma dei sussidi nell’anno 2016-17.
È notevole anche l’operato del Segretariato di Solidarietà nel coordinamento e distribuzione dei sussidi alle istituzioni scolastiche gestite dalle summenzionate istituzioni.
Una tra le prestigiose fondazioni che assicura la formazione accademica è la Bethlehem University. Quasi 3000 giovani, la maggior parte palestinesi musulmani, vengono formati intellettualmente e umanamente con la speranza di impegnarsi nella costruzione di un Paese dove regni rispetto reciproco e dove sia preservata la dignità umana. È apprezzabile l’impegno dei Fratelli de La Salle nella conduzione dell’Università.

Sussidi Straordinari e Emergenze
La situazione creatasi a causa della follia umana e le atrocità del cosiddetto stato dell’Islam, hanno costretto molti cristiani a lasciare i propri paesi, specialmente la Siria e l’Iraq. La Congregazione ha particolare attenzione alle necessità dei cristiani rimasti in questi paesi e allo stesso tempo assicura i mezzi necessari per una vita dignitosa a chi è rifugiato nei paesi limitrofi, come Libano e Giordania. Inoltre, si provvede anche a favorire l’attività culturale e spirituale che in qualche modo fanno avvicinare le persone, nonostante le differenze religiose ed etniche.

Conclusione
Come si può constatare, le spese superano la Colletta e pertanto è necessaria una maggiore cooperazione e un impegno generoso dei cristiani di tutto il mondo verso i loro fratelli e sorelle della Terra Santa e del Medio Oriente. La domanda del Signore rivolta a Caino “Dov’è tuo fratello?” deve interpellarci nel cammino della Quaresima per aprire i nostri occhi e il cuore a favore dei nostri fratelli bisognosi.

La Custodia di Terra Santa, da secoli si impegna nella conservazione e la rivitalizzazione dei luoghi santi del cristianesimo nella Terra di Gesù e in tutto il Medio Oriente. Tra i vari obiettivi della missione francescana, si ricordano il sostegno e lo sviluppo della minoranza cristiana che vi abita, la conservazione e valorizzazione di aree archeologiche e santuari, l’intervento nei casi di emergenza, la liturgia nei luoghi di culto, le opere apostoliche e l’assistenza ai pellegrini. Anche per il biennio 2015/2016, la presenza francescana in Terra Santa, si è manifestata attraverso la progettazione, programmazione e l’esecuzione dei seguenti progetti e opere:

1. OPERE RIVOLTE IN FAVORE DEI PELLEGRINI
1.1. GERUSALEMME
Santo Sepolcro
Collaborazione con tutte le comunità orientali presenti in basilica e con le autorità civili per il restauro della tomba del Cristo risorto.
Ristrutturazione parziale del convento.
Orto degli Ulivi al Getsemani
Manutenzione e restauri del convento e del sito (copertura della Grotta, impianto microfoni, impianto acqua calda, pulizia dei mosaici)
Acquisto di un nuovo organo per la basilica.
In corso di realizzazione: tunnel che collegherà tramite percorso pedonale l’area della basilica e il parcheggio sul lato della Valle del Cedron.
In corso la progettazione: centro servizi per i pellegrini.
Santuario della Flagellazione del Signore
Realizzazione di una nuova cucina per il convento.
VII e VIII Stazione della Via Dolorosa
Ristrutturazione e riqualificazione dei locali esistenti.
Convento San Salvatore: sede della Custodia di Terra Santa e del seminario
Rifacimento: dell’impermeabilizzazione e della pavimentazione della copertura della navata destra della Chiesa parrocchiale; di una parte della pavimentazione in piastrelle del salone parrocchiale.
Realizzazione: della nuova area ecologica del convento (Fase II); dei nuovi uffici dell’Associazione di Terra Santa, della nuova copertura per la vecchia colombaia, di un magazzino nel mezzanino della nuova lavanderia, di un locale officina-falegnameria.
Infermeria: Sostituzione degli attuali letti con letti ospedalieri a movimentazione elettrica donati dall’ospedale di Bergamo; rifacimento dell’impianto idrico e di alcuni bagni.
Ristrutturazione dei locali del seminario, dei nuovi uffici, del locale archivio nell’ex segreteria.
Pulizia e consolidamento delle facciate di alcuni cortili.
Progettazione del recupero dell’area (ca.1600m2) da destinare a varie funzioni, tra cui nuovi uffici, libreria, area di ristoro, nuovi spazi per l’Istituto Magnificat, parcheggi e Auditorium ai piani interrati.
Terra Sancta Museum
Realizzazione di un moderno centro museale per la valorizzazione del patrimonio artistico, archeologico e culturale francescano. Nell’area di circa 2500m2 saranno compresi: Museo Via Dolorosa, Flagellazione (lavori conclusi); Museo Archeologico, Flagellazione (in corso), Museo Storico, San Salvatore (in corso).
Casa di accoglienza Maria Bambina per pellegrini e volontari
Terminata la ristrutturazione dei bagni al secondo piano per l’accoglienza dei pellegrini a basso costo.
In corso di progettazione e realizzazione i lavori del piano convento delle suore Elisabettine.
Terra Santa College
Progettazione per la realizzazione delle camere per volontari e residenti, bagni, cucina e sala da pranzo.
Christian Information Center
In corso i lavori di ristrutturazione completa del centro all’interno del quale verrà inserita una nuova area ristoro per pellegrini e una sala didattica multimediale dedicata in particolare al S. Sepolcro.
Franciscan bookshop
Ristrutturazione completa della libreria francescana per i pellegrini.
Santuario di Betania: Casa di Marta, Maria e Lazzaro
Restauro e valorizzazione dei resti bizantini e medievali del convento di Betania attraverso: recupero delle aree degradate; formazione e impiego di 10 giovani palestinesi al restauro; sostegno alle attività imprenditoriali della locale associazione femminile; progetto didattico con le scuole primarie per la conoscenza dei siti religiosi e archeologici locali.
Santuario di Betfage: Ingresso del Signore a Gerusalemme
Realizzazione di nuovi locali parrocchiali e di nuovi bagni per i pellegrini.
1.2. AIN KAREM: LA PATRIA DI SAN GIOVANNI BATTISTA
Santuario della Nascita di San Giovanni
In corso: lavori di rifacimento della copertura della chiesa di San Giovanni; ristrutturazione dei locali del seminario e del convento di San Giovanni.
Conclusi: consolidamento dell’antico conventino di San Giovanni trasformato in un nuovo convento per le “Suore del catechismo”; salone/mensa per pellegrini e dei terrazzamenti nel giardino.
In fase di progettazione i lavori di restauro della chiesa che soffre di problemi statici.
Santuario della Visitazione
Ristrutturazione delle facciate nel cortile del santuario della Visitazione
Santuario di San Giovanni al Deserto
Terminata la ristrutturazione della cappella presso la Tomba di santa Elisabetta.
Ricostruzione di un eremo in seguito a un incendio avvenuto nel 2015.
1.3. BETLEMME
Basilica della Natività
Collaborazione con le altre comunità ecclesiali presenti e l’ANP al restauro della basilica della Natività
Grotta del Latte
Revisione dell’impianto di acqua sanitaria e impermeabilizzazione del tetto del convento.
1.4. EMMAUS QUBEIBEH
Santuario dei santi Simeone e Cleopa, discepoli di Emmaus
Ultimata la ristrutturazione delle coperture e realizzazione della manutenzione delle inferriate.
Progettazione di alcuni interventi di miglioramento e rinnovo degli arredi della Scuola materna.
1.5. NAZARETH
Basilica dell’Annunciazione a Maria Santissima
Accesso ai disabili: costruzione dell’ascensore e acquisto di due scivoli automatici.
Ristrutturazione: sacristia della basilica inferiore e dei fondamenti del santuario.
Installazione di un centro multimediale per le trasmissioni televisive del Christian Media Center e Canção Nova.
1.6. CAFARNAO: LA CITTÀ DI GESÙ
Area archeologica
Terminati: il restauro dei mosaici della chiesa bizantina; i lavori di adeguamento del sistema di videocamere per il controllo del sito.
Realizzazione: accesso alternativo alla sacristia e recupero del locale sottostante; foresteria (ca 10 posti).

Concluso: il progetto della nuova copertura per la basilica del Memoriale di Mosè; percorso espositivo per i mosaici scoperti in fase di scavo i lavori di restauro e conservazione dei mosaici e dei muri antichi esterni; ristrutturazione dei bagni per i pellegrini; magazzino archeologico.
Tutto è stato inaugurato il 15 ottobre 2016.

Borse di studio e sussidi
Finanziamento: 390 borse di studio universitarie per la durata di 4 anni, distribuite nelle diverse Università (Betlemme, Un. Ebraica, Bir Zeit, Amman); 178 sussidi per studenti in difficoltà.
Sostegno a imprese artigiane
Acquisto di pezzi di ricambio, apparecchiature per la produzione, ausili per la messa in sicurezza delle attività di 10 piccole attività artigiane.
Betlemme: Laboratori per la ceramica
Terminata la realizzazione dei laboratori di ceramica negli ambienti del Saint Francis Millenium Center adiacenti ai laboratori del legno, della madreperla e della ceramica già completati e funzionanti.
Gerusalemme: Handcrafts & local Art products’ center
In fase di realizzazione: un centro per la vendita di prodotti di artigianato locale (legno, madreperla e ceramica) prodotti a Betlemme, uno spazio di circa 250m2 all’interno della Città Vecchia di Gerusalemme.

Proseguono: i progetti a sostegno del consultorio familiare parrocchiale; il progetto rivolto a più di 20 ragazzi (età 6-12), provenienti da famiglie in difficoltà; assistenza medica per le famiglie in gravi difficoltà economiche; ristrutturazione delle case appartenenti alle famiglie più bisognose.

Terra Santa School for girls: Terminati ristrutturazione e recupero dei locali sottostanti il piazzale.
Terra Santa School for boys: Terminata parte della ristrutturazione (rinnovamento degli spazi interni con la riallocazione di alcuni di essi, la realizzazione di nuovi spazi per l’asilo, il rifacimento degli impianti).
Progettazione di due livelli interrati sotto il campo da basket, da impiegare quale centro sportivo.
Cana: santuario del primo miracolo del Signore
In corso di realizzazione: le opere per la costruzione di una nuova scuola (terminate le opere strutturali). Il complesso comprenderà anche il centro parrocchiale e un parcheggio coperto per un’area di 5000m2.

Città Vecchia. Continua il lavoro di ristrutturazione delle case della Città Vecchia con lo scopo di migliorare le condizioni di vita dei residenti: ristrutturazione completa di 7 abitazioni (4 nel 2015, 3 nel 2016); ristrutturazione parziale di 6 abitazioni (2 nel 2015 e 4 nel 2016); ristrutturazione degli involucri esterni di 5 edifici.
Dar al Consul renovation project. In corso la ristrutturazione del complesso residenziale nella Città Vecchia, con 41 appartamenti e un piano terra in disuso. L’area del progetto è di circa 2500m2.
- Classe A ristrutturazione con interventi Maggiori di 14 abitazioni (in corso di cui 5 completati).
- Classe B ristrutturazione con interventi Medi di 16 abitazioni (in corso di cui 8 completati).
- Classe C ristrutturazione con interventi Minori di 11 abitazioni (in corso di cui 5 completati).
- Ristrutturazione involucri esterni di 6 edifici in corso (di cui 2 completati).
Dar el Kbire: Progettazione dell’ampliamento dell’edificio di 300-400m2 e dell’intervento sulle 19 abitazioni esistenti ammalorate (6 sono completate). L’area totale interessata dal progetto è di ca. 2500m2.
Tumian Palace: In progettazione l’ampliamento dell’edificio con la realizzazione di 3 piani aggiuntivi e 800m2 ad uso residenziale.
Abu Geries: In fase di progettazione l’intervento di ampliamento dell’edificio con la realizzazione di 750m2 destinati a uffici, ristorazione e negozi.
Saint James housing project di Beit Hanina: si tratta di un complesso di 6 edifici con un totale di 42 appartamenti divisi su 3 livelli. Ottenuto il permesso di costruzione per due piani aggiuntivi in ciascuno degli edifici, per un totale di 24 appartamenti. In corso la progettazione esecutiva per sopraelevazione.
Beitfage (Monte degli Olivi): progettazione di nuovi appartamenti, un ampliamento di circa 750m2 del complesso residenziale costituito da 10 edifici; realizzazione del muro a protezione della proprietà.
Pisgat Zeev housing project: Progettazione del nuovo complesso residenziale con 70-80 unità abitative e 300m2 per uso commerciale.
Giaffa
The Franciscan Neighborhood: Ottenuto il permesso di costruzione di 124 appartamenti destinati alle famiglie cristiane della parrocchia. L’area totale degli appartamenti sarà di circa 10.000m2.
Nazareth
Housing Project in Nazareth: Progetto per la realizzazione di un complesso residenziale, dove oltre alla Cappella e alcuni locali per uso sociale, si prevede la costruzione di 80 appartamenti da destinare alle giovani famiglie.
2.6. ALTRE OPERE CULTURALI
Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. Ogni anno la Custodia di Terra Santa sostiene economicamente la Facoltà di Scienze Bibliche e di Archeologia dello Studium Biblicum Franciscanum di Gerusalemme. Offerte circa 30 borse di studio a studenti provenienti da diverse diocesi, per tutta la durata degli studi.
Christian Media Center. La Custodia ha dato un nuovo nome al Franciscan Media Center, che dal dicembre 2014 si chiama Christian Media Center. I servizi offerti comprendono: Website, completamente rinnovato, semplificato nell’uso ed ora mobile friendly; Terra Santa News notiziario settimanale che racconta fede, storia, attualità della Terra Santa; trasmesso da ca. 35 emittenti nel mondo in 6 lingue; documentari su temi sociali e religiosi, in diverse lingue; diretta di celebrazioni liturgiche ed eventi.
Istituto di Musica Magnificat. In pochi anni di attività il Magnificat è diventata una scuola di musica, in grado di preparare diversi studenti provenienti da culture diverse (Cristiani, Ebrei e Musulmani). Il Magnificat promuove attività di ricerca e manifestazioni culturali a livello locale e internazionale.
3. ALTRE OPERE
È continuato e si è intensificato in Siria, Giordania e Libano l’aiuto alla popolazione siriana ed irachena, cristiani ma non solo, che vive una situazione di estrema necessità, attraverso la presenza dei Frati della Custodia di Terra Santa con il sostegno finanziario e la collaborazione di Associazione di Terra Sancta.
3.1. IN GIORDANIA
Si mettono a disposizione alcune sale per un gruppo di donne rifugiate irakene presso il Seminario adiacente al Collegio di Terra Santa
Aiuto ad alcune famiglie dei campi profughi.
3.2. IN LIBANO
Si accolgono e sostengono temporaneamente 35 famiglie irachene a Deir Mimas e Harissa, in attesa dei visti per emigrare. Quando le famiglie lasciano il Libano vengono sostituite da nuove.
50 bambini e giovani iracheni e siriani sono stati aiutati a frequentare la scuola.
3.3. IN SIRIA
Nelle parrocchie della Custodia di Aleppo, Damasco, Knayeh, Yakoubieh e Latakieh sono continuate e rafforzate le attività dei centri di emergenza. Gli aiuti sono stati principalmente rivolti al centro di emergenza di Aleppo presso la parrocchia di san Francesco, dove il bisogno della popolazione cristiana, ma non solo, è stato maggiore. In termini complessivi di sostengo alla popolazione si è realizzato: 120 abitazioni riparate; 85 famiglie aiutate mensilmente per pagare l’affitto; 1.650 famiglie hanno ricevuto mensilmente cibo ed altri articoli di prima necessità; 540 famiglie/mese hanno ricevuto acqua presso le loro case; 440 persone/mese aiutate nel sostenere le spese di prima necessità; 840 famiglie/mese hanno goduto di un aiuto economico per accedere alla fornitura di elettricità; 480 studenti di scuola primaria e secondaria sono stati aiutati a frequentare la scuola coprendo le rette scolastiche.
Sostenuto l’ospedale Al Rajaa di Aleppo, che ha una capienza di 60 posti letto ed appartiene alla Custodia di Terra Santa, attraverso: riabilitazione del 2° piano (12 stanze per 24 letti); fornitura di apparecchi medicali necessari; sostegno alle cure mediche e di ospedalizzazione per 90 pazienti indigenti.
3.4. A RODI COS
Aiuti in generi alimentari e di prima assistenza ai rifugiati che transitano per il centro di accoglienza temporanea di Rodi e quello di Cos.
4. STIPENDI ORDINARI DELLA CUSTODIA
Stipendi di circa 1300 impiegati in 80 santuari, 15 scuole, 25 parrocchie, 4 Case Nove per pellegrini e attività varie.

The Custody of the Holy Land has for centuries been committed to the conservation and revitalisation of the Holy Places of Christianity in the Land of Jesus and in the entire region of the Middle East. Among the various objectives of the Franciscan mission are the sustaining and progress of the Christian minority that lives in these regions, the conservation and care of the archaeological sites and sanctuaries, the interventions in emergency casers, the liturgy in the Places of cult, the apostolic works and assistance to the pilgrims. During the two years 2015/2016, the Franciscan presence in the Holy Land has been manifested in the projection, programming and carrying out of the following projects and works:

1. WORKS AIMED AT THE BENEFIT OF PILGRIMS
1.1. JERUSALEM
Holy Sepulchre
Collaboration with all the other Oriental communities present in the Basilica and with the civil authorities for the restoration of the Tomb of the Risen Christ.
Partial restructuring of the convent.
Garden of Olives in Gethsemane
Upkeep and restoration of the convent and site (covering of the Grotto, PA system, hot water installation, cleaning of the mosaics).
A new organ for the Basilica.
In course of realisation: tunnel for pedestrian communication between the area of the Basilica and the parking lot on the side of the Kidron Valley.
In course of realisation: a centre for the service of pilgrims.
Sanctuary of the Flagellation of the Lord
Realisation of a new kitchen for the convent.
VII e VIII Stations of the Via Dolorosa
Restructuring and requalification of the existing premises.
Convent of Saint Saviour: seat of the Custody of the Holy Land and of the seminary
Remaking: of the waterproofing system and pavimentation of the roof of the right aisle of the parish Church; and of part of the floor tiles of the parish hall.
Realisation: of a new ecological area of the convent (Phaser II); of the new offices of the Associazione di Terra Santa, of a new covering of the old dovecote, of a storehouse in the mezzanine of the new laundry, and of the place of the workshop-carpentry.
Infirmary: Changing of the beds with hospital beds with electric handling equipment donated by the hospital of Bergamo; remaking of the water system and of some bathrooms.
Restructuring of the premises of the seminary, of new office, and of the premises of the archives in the ex-office of the Secretary.
Cleaning and consolidation of the facades of some courtyards.
Projection to regain an area (ca. 1600m2) to be destined to various uses, including new offices, library, refreshment area, new spaces for the Magnificat Institute, parking lots and Auditorium underground.
Terra Sancta Museum
Realisation of a modern museum centre for the valorisation of the artistic, archaeological and cultural Franciscan heritage. Within an area of circa 2500m2 are included: Museum Via Dolorosa, Flagellation (works concluded); Archaeological Museum, Flagallation (works in progress), Historical Museum at Saint Saviour (works in progress).
House of welcome Maria Bambina for pilgrims and volunteers
Termination of the restructuring of the bathrooms on the second floor for the welcoming of pilgrims at reduced prices.
In the course of projection and realisation are the works on the floor destined to be the convent of the Elisabethine Sisters.
Terra Santa College
Project for the realisation of rooms for volunteers and residents, with bathrooms, kitchen and dining hall.
Christian Information Center
In course of realisation are the works of complete restructuring of the centre in which a new refreshment area for pilgrims will be installed, together with a multimedial didactic hall dedicated particularly to the Holy Sepulchre.

Sanctuary of Bethany: House of Martha, Mary and Lazarus
Restoration and developing of the Byzantine and Medieval remains of the convent of Bethany through: the recovery of degraded areas; the formation and employment of 10 young Palestinians in the restoration; sustaining of the business activities of the local femminine association; didactic project with primary schools for the knowledge of the local religious and archaeological sites.
Sanctuary of Bethfage: Entry of the Lord in Jerusalem
Realisation of new parish halls and new bathrooms for pilgrims.
1.2. AIN KAREM: BIRTHPLACE OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST
Sanctuary of the Nativity of Saint John
In course: works of the remaking of the roof of the church of Saint John; restructuring of the premises of the seminary and convent of Saint John.
Concluded: consolidation of the ancient small convent of Saint John transformed in a new convent for the “Sisters of Catechism”; hall/dining hall for pilgrims and the terraces in the garden.
In phase of programming the works of the restoration of the church, which shows static problems.

Restructuring of the facades of the courtyard of the sanctuary of the Visitation.

Basilica of the Nativity
Collaboration with the other ecclesial comunities present and the ANP to the restoration of the Basilica of the Nativity.

Revision of the sanitary water system and waterproofing of the roof of the convent.
1.4. EMMAUS QUBEIBEH
Sanctuary of Saints Simon and Cleopas, disciples of Emmaus
Concluded the restructuring of the roofs and the realisation of the maintenance of the lattices.
Programming of some interventions aimed at improving and renewing furniture in the kindergarten.
1.5. NAZARETH
Basilica of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary
Access for disabled: construction of a lift and acquisition of two automatic slides.
Restructuring: sacristy of the lower basilica and of the foundations of the sanctuary.
Installation of a multimedia centre for television transmissions of the Christian Media Centre and Canção Nova.
1.6. CAPERNAHUM: THE TOWN OF JESUS
Archaeological zone
Concluded: restoration of the mosaics of the byzantine church; the works of adjustment of the system of videocameras to control the site.
Realisation: alternative access to the sacristy and recovery of the underlying premises; guest lodgings (ca 10 places).
Phase II soon to be realised: the accessibility of visitors to the archaeological site through routes and wooden passageways across the archaeological zone.
Remaking of the pavimentation of the parking lot for coaches.
Memorial of Saint Peter
Complete replacement of the air-conditioning system.
Convent
Conclusion of the internal maintenance works (pastering, electrical system and air-conditioning).
To be realised shortly: works of maintenance of the facades.

1.7. MOUNT TABOR: SANCTUARY OF THE TRANSFIGURATION
Concluded the realisation of a new parking lot adjacent to the principal entrance – Phase I.
In phase of programming: the internal parking lot of the monastery (600m2), of the principal road linking the external and internal parking lots, and bathrooms for pilgrims – Phases II and III.
1.8. MOUNT NEBO (JORDAN): MEMORIAL OF MOSES
Concluded: the project of the new covering for the roof of the basilica of the Memorial of Moses; an exhibition route for the mosaics discovered during the excavations, works of restoration and conservation of the mosaics and of the external walls; restructuring of the bathrooms for pilgrims; archaeological storeroom.
The whole project has been inaugurated on 15 October 2016.

2.1. WORKS FOR THE BENEFIT OF YOUNG PEOPLE
Scholarships and subsidies
Financing: 390 scholarships for university studies for a period of 4 years, distributed in the various Universities (Bethlehem, Hebrew University, Bir Zeit, Amman); 178 subsidies for students in difficulty.

Acquisition of spare parts, machines for production, auxiliary equipment for the safety of the activity of 10 small artisan activities.

Concluded the realisation of laboratories for ceramics in the premises of the Saint Francis Millennium Centre adjacent to the laboratories of wood, mother of pearl and ceramics which are ready and functioning.
Jerusalem: Handcrafts & local Art products’ center
In phase of realisation: a centre for the selling of products of local artisanship (wood, mother of pearl and ceramics) produced in Bethlehem, a space of circa 250m2 within the Old City of Jerusalem.

In continuation: the projects to sustain a parish family counselling centre; the project aimed at more than 20 boys (aged 6-12) coming from families in difficulty; medical assistance for families in serious economical difficulties; restructuring of houses of the most needy families.

Concluded the realisation of a building that will guarantee around 460m2 for the activities of the parish.

Terra Sancta School for boys: Concluded part of the restructuring (renewal of the internal spaces with the reallocation of some of them, the realisation of new spaces for kindergarten, remaking of the systems).
Programming of two basement levels underneath basket-ball field, to serve as a sports centre.
Cana: Sanctuary of the First Miracle of the Lord
In course of realisation: the works for the construction of a new school (structural works concluded). The whole complex will also include a parish centre and a covered parking lot covering an area of 5000m2.

Extraordinary maintenance of the whole complex, which is now being run by the Franciscans.
2.5. APARTMENTS FOR NEEDY FAMILIES AND YOUNG COUPLES
Jerusalem
Old City. Continuation of the works of restructuring of the houses of the Old City with the aim of improving the conditions of life of the residents: complete restructuring of 7 houses (4 in 2015, 3 in 2016); partial restructuring of 6 houses (2 in 2015 and 4 in 2016); restructuring of the external shells of 5 buildings.
Dar al Consul renovation project. In course the restructuring of the residential complex in the Old City, with 41 apartments and a ground floor which is currently not in use. The area of the project covers circa 2500m2.
- Class A restructuring with Major interventions of 14 buildings (in course of which 5 completed).
- Class B restructuring with Medium interventions of 16 buildings (in course of which 8 completed).
- Class C restructuring with Minor interventions of 11 buildings (in course of which 5 completed).
- Restructuring of external shells of 6 buildings in course (of which 2 completed).
Dar el Kbire: Programming of the extension of the edifice of 300-400m2 and intervention on 19 deteriorated existing houses (6 are ready). The total area interested in the project is ca. 2500m2.
Tumian Palace: In programming the extension of the building with the realisation of 3 extra floors and 800m2 for residential use.
Abu Geries: In phase of programming the intervention of the enlargement of the edifice with the realisation of 750m2 destined to become offices, restaurants and shops.

After having gained permession to build an extra two floors in each of the edifices, for a total of 24 apartments. In course of programming the executive projection for the upper floors.
Bethfage (Mount of Olives): programming of new apartments, an extension of circa 750m2 of the residential complex consisting of 10 houses; realisation of a boundary wall to protect the entire property.
Pisgat Zeev housing project: Programming of a new residential complex with 70-80 dwelling units and 300m2 for commercial use.
Jaffa
The Franciscan Neighbourhood: Acquired permits to build 124 apartments destined for the Christian families of the parish. The total area of the apartments will cover circa 10.000m2.
Nazareth
Housing Project in Nazareth: Project for the realisation of a residential complex, where besides the Chapel and some premises for social use, we plan to build 80 apartments to be destined for young families.
2.6. OTHER CULTURAL PROJECTS
Studium Biblicum Franciscanum. Each year the Custody of the Holy Land sustains economically the Faculty of Biblical Sciences and Archaeology of the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum of Jerusalem. It offers circa 30 scholarships for students coming from various dioceses, covering the entire period of their studies.
Christian Media Centre. The Custody has given a new name to the Franciscan Media Centre, and from December 2014 it is called Christian Media Centre. The services offered include: Website, completely renewed, simplified in its use and now mobile friendly; Terra Sancta News, a weekly news bullettin which presents faith, history, current events in the Holy Land; transmitted by ca. 35 broadcasters in the world in 6 languages; documentaries on social and religious themes in various languages; direct transmission of liturgical celebrations and events.
Magnificat Institute of Music. In a few years of activity the Magnificat has become a school of music, in grade of preparing various students coming from diverse cultures (Christians, Jews and Muslims). The Magnificat promotes activities of research and cultural manifestations on the local and international level.
3. OTHER WORKS
In Syria, Jordan and Lebanon we have intensified the continued the aid to the Syrian and Iraqi populations, both Christians and non-Christians, who live in a situation of extreme need, through the presence of the Friars of the Custody of the Holy Land with the financial help and collaboration of the Associazione di Terra Sancta.
3.1. IN JORDAN
We have placed some halls of the Seminary adjacent to the Terra Sancta College for the use of a group of women refugees from Iraq.
Aid to some families in the refugee camps.
3.2. IN LEBANON
35 families are being welcomed and sustained on a temporary basis at Deir Mimas and Harissa, while waiting to obtain visas in order to emigrate. When these families leave Lebanon they will be substituted by new families.
50 Iraqi and Syrian children and young people are helped to be able to go to school.
3.3. IN SYRIA
In the parishes of the Custody in Aleppo, Damascus, Knayeh, Yakoubieh and Latakieh we have continued to strengthen the activities in the emergency centres. The aid is principally directed to the emergency centre of Aleppo in the parish of Saint Francis, where the needs of the Christian and non-Christian population have been greatest. In overall terms the aid to the population has been realised thus: 120 houses repaired; 85 families helped every month to pay their rent; 1.650 families have recieved every month food and other items of first necessity; 540 families each month have received water in their houses; 440 persons each month have been helped to buy items of first necessity 840 families every month have been given economical aid to be able to have electricity; 480 students of the primary and secondary school have been helped to be able to go to school and pay their school fees.
We have supported the hospital Al Rajaa of Aleppo, which can hold 60 beds and which belongs to the Custody of the Holy Land, through: rehabilitation of the second floor (12 rooms with 24 beds); providing necessary medicinal equipment; sustaining the medical care and hospital expenses for 90 patients.
3.4. RHODES KOS
Aid through food supplies and first assistance to refugees who pass through the centre of temporary welcome of Rhodes and Kos.
4. ORDINARY WAGES OF THE CUSTODY
Wages of circa 1300 employees in 80 shrines, 15 schools, 25 parishes, 4 Case Nove for pilgrims and various other activities.

Comunicato stampa congiunto con la Custodia di Terra Santa circa il contributo della Santa Sede per i restauri della Basilica della Natività a Betlemme e del Santo Sepolcro a Gerusalemme

La Custodia di Terra Santa è lieta di annunciare che la Santa Sede ha offerto un contributo di 500.000 dollari per i lavori di restauro che si stanno realizzando nella Basilica della Natività di Betlemme. Come noto, una parte importante dei restauri è già stata realizzata e si spera che, con l’accordo delle comunità interessate, il lavoro possa presto essere completato.
La Santa Sede desidera anche contribuire al restauro del Santo Sepolcro in Gerusalemme, e ha stanziato a tal fine un eguale importo di 500.000 dollari per la nuova fase dei lavori che interesseranno l’area attorno all’Edicola del Santo Sepolcro. Questo secondo contributo sarà erogato dopo che le comunità titolari dello Status Quo avranno costituito di comune accordo un apposito Comitato.
Entrambi i contributi, resi possibili tramite la Segreteria di Stato e la Congregazione per le Chiese Orientali, saranno messi a disposizione tramite la Custodia di Terra Santa.
La cura e l’attenzione per questi due Luoghi Santi, che da secoli alimentano la fede della Chiesa e quella di innumerevoli pellegrini, sono segno ed espressione dell’amore per Cristo stesso, affinché “il volto della Chiesa rifletta visibilmente la luce di Cristo Verbo incarnato. Egli è la nostra pace, e bussa alla porta del nostro cuore in Medio Oriente” (Papa Francesco, Discorso alla R.O.A.C.O., 16 giugno 2016).

The Custody of the Holy Land is pleased to announce that the Holy See has offered a contribution of $500,000 dollars for the restoration project being carried out in the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem. As is noted, an important part of the restorations has already been achieved, and it is to be hoped that, in agreement with the interested communities, the project may soon be completed.
The Holy See wishes to contribute as well to the restoration of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and to that end has allocated a corresponding amount of $500,000 for the new phase of the work, which will concern the area surrounding the Aedicule of the Holy Sepulcher. This second contribution will be dispensed after the communities named in the Status Quo have by common agreement constituted an appropriate Committee.
Both contributions are jointly granted by the Secretary of State and the Congregation for the Eastern Churches and will be made available through the Custody of the Holy Land.
Care and concern for these two Holy Places, which for centuries have nourished the faith of the Church and that of countless pilgrims, are a sign and expression of love for Christ Himself, such that “the face of the Church reflect visibly the light of Christ the Word Incarnate. He is our peace, and He is knocking at the door of our hearts in the Middle East” (Pope Francis, Speech to the R.O.A.C.O., June 16th, 2016).
