Appointment of archbishop of Bourges, France
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Sylvain Bataille of Saint-Etienne as archbishop of Bourges, France.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. Sylvain Bataille was born on 22 July 1964. After studying philosophy at the Paray-le-Monial Seminary and theology at the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome, he graduated in theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris.
He was ordained a priest on 11 March 1989 for the diocese of Beauvais.
He has held the following offices: member of the Saint-Jean-Marie-Vianney Society (1993), superior of the major seminary of Ars (2000), rector of the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome (2009-2014), parish priest of Chaumont-en-Vexin (2014-2015), vicar general of the diocese of Beauvais, and member of the Commission for the Liturgy and Sacramental Pastoral Care within the Bishops’ Conference of France (2016-2022). He is currently a member of the Permanent Council of the Bishops’ Conference of France.
On 18 May 2016 he was appointed bishop of Saint-Etienne, receiving episcopal ordination on 3 July 2016.
