The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend José María Avendaño Perea, of the clergy of the diocese of Getafe, Spain, and vicar general, as auxiliary bishop of the same diocese, assigning him the titular see of Illiberi.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. José María Avendaño Perea was born on 25 April 1957 in Villanueva de Alcardete, Toledo. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology in the major seminary of Madrid, where he was ordained a priest on 14 March 1987. He was subsequently incardinated in Getafe after its erection in 1991. He holds a primary school teaching diploma (1978) and a specialization in speech therapy from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1981). He was also awarded a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas (1985) and a licentiate in pastoral theology from the Higher Pastoral Institute of the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca (2004).
He has held the following offices: parish vicar of El Salvador (1987-1989) and San Nicasio (1989-1997); parish priest of the same parishes (1997-2005); and social pastoral delegate (2002-2018). Since 2004 he has served as vicar general, and since 2018, vicar for the clergy and member of the General Council of Spanish Caritas.
