Resignation and appointment of bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Velletri-Segni, Italy

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the suburbicarian diocese of Velletri-Segni, presented by Bishop Vincenzo Apicella.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Stefano Russo, until now emeritus of Fabriano-Matelica and secretary general of the Italian Episcopal Conference, as bishop of the suburbicarian diocese of Velletri-Segni, Italy.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Stefano Russo was born on 26 August 1961 in Ascoli Piceno, in the diocese and province of the same name. He graduated in architecture from the University of Pescara in 1990. He attended courses for the bachelor’s degree in theology at the Pontifical Lateran University.

On 20 April 1991 he received priestly ordination at the Cathedral of Ascoli Piceno.

From 1990 to 2007 he was president of the Commission for Religious Art and Cultural Heritage of the diocese of Ascoli Piceno, and was responsible for ecclesiastical cultural assets; from 1990 he was a member of the Council and from 1996 to 2005 he served as regional officer for Ecclesiastical Cultural Assets of the Episcopal Council of the Marches; from 1995 to 2005 he coordinated the activity of the Ascoli Piceno Diocesan Museum. From 1999 to 2001 he was parish administrator of San Pietro parish in Castel San Pietro (AP). From 2001 to 2005 he was head of UDTAP, the diocesan officer that coordinates the recovery operations for buildings of art-historical value damaged by the earthquake. From 2001 he was a member, and from 2005 to 2015 head of the Committee of the National Office for Ecclesiastical Cultural Assets of the Italian Episcopal Conference, and deputy parish priest of San Giacomo della Marca. He has also served as a member of the Commission for Cultural Heritage and Activities of the Marches Region from 2002 to 2005, and since 2015, parish priest of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Ascoli Piceno.

On 18 March 2016 he was appointed as bishop of Fabriano-Matelica.

On 28 September 2018 he became secretary general of the Italian Episcopal Conference, while continuing to support the diocese of Fabriano-Matelica as apostolic administrator until 27 April 2019. He is also chair of the Management Board of the Saints Francis of Assisi and Catherine of Siena Foundation of Religion.

 

Resignation and appointment of bishop of Città del Castello, Italy, and union in persona Episcopi of the dioceses of Gubbio and Città del Castello

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Città del Castello, Italy, presented by Bishop Domenico Cancian, F.A.M.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Luciano Paolucci Bedini of Gubbio as bishop of Città del Castello, Italy, uniting the two sees in persona Episcopi.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Luciano Paolucci Bedini was born on 30 August 1968 in Jesi, in the diocese and province of Ancona. He entered the Pius XI Pontifical Regional Seminary of the Marches in Fano (PU), and was awarded a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Theological Institute of the Marches.

On 30 September 1995 he was ordained a priest in Osimo.

From 1996 to 1999 he attended the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome, obtaining a licentiate in theology.

He has held the following pastoral offices: parish vicar of San Paolo Apostolo in Ancona from 1995 to 2004; director of the Diocesan Catechistic Office from 1999 to 2011; lecturer in catechetics and pastoral theology at the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences in Ancona from 2001 to 2011; director of the Regional Catechistic Office from 2003 to 2010; vice rector from 2004, and since 2010, rector of the Pontifical Pius XI Regional Seminary of Ancona; regional ecclesiastical assistant of AGESCI from 2005 to 2010, and since 2010, member of the Regional Presbyteral Commission.

He was elected bishop of Gubbio on 29 September 2017, and received episcopal consecration on the following 3 December. Within the Italian Episcopal Conference, he is a member of the Commission for Ecumenism and Dialogue.

 

Appointment of bishop of Lamezia Terme, Italy

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Serafino Parisi, of the clergy of Crotone-Santa Severina, parish priest and director of the diocesan Biblical School, as bishop of the diocese of Lamezia Terme, Italy.

Msgr. Serafino Parisi was born on 3 January 1962 in Santa Severina, in the province of Crotone, archdiocese of Crotone-Santa Severina. He received his baccalaureate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, a licentiate in biblical sciences from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, a doctorate from the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy and a degree in philosophy from the University of Tor Vergata.

He was ordained a priest on 25 April 1987.

He was parish priest of Santa Maria Maggiore in Santa Severina; parish administrator of San Tommaso d’Aquino in Altilia and from 1990 to 1994 parish priest; episcopal vicar for pastoral care and culture; member of the diocesan Presbyteral Council and member of the College of Consultors. In the 1990s he was diocesan assistant of Catholic Action and director of the diocesan School of Socio-Political Formation. He has also served as parish priest of San Nicola Vescovo in Cotronei (1994-2000); parish priest of Cristo Risorto in Steccato di Cutro (2000-2003); member of the management board of the diocese; representative of the diocese of Crotone-Santa Severina in the Regional Presbyteral Commission; vice president of the IDSC; director of the diocesan catechetical office; and member of the regional Commission for Doctrine of Faith and Catechesis. He is a professor of New Testament Greek, Hebrew and Biblical Exegesis at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy in Naples, a freelance journalist and director of Vivarium, journal of theological sciences. Until now he has been director of the Bèt Jòseph diocesan Biblical School and parish priest of San Dionigi in Crotone.

The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Laurent Ulrich, metropolitan of Paris, as ordinary for eastern faithful without the hierarchy of their own sui iuris Church in France.

 

Appointment of bishop of the eparchy of Saint John Chrysostom of Gurgaon of the Syro-Malankars, India

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Thomas Anthonios Valiyavilayil, O.I.C., as bishop of the eparchy of Saint John Chysostom of Gurgaon of the Syro-Malankars, transferring hinm from the eparchy of Saint Ephrem of Khadki of the Syro-Malankars.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Thomas Anthonios Valiyavilayil, O.I.C. was born on 21 November 1955 in Adoor, in the archeparchy of Trivandrum. A member of the Order of the Imitation of Christ Institute, he gave his religious vows on December 9, 1980 and was ordained a priest the following 27 December. He was awarded a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Oriental Institute.

Since ordination, he has held the following positions: superior of several convents; director of a school in Kottayam; teacher of postulants; bursar; chaplain and parish priest; professor at Saint Mary’s Malankara Major Seminary in Trivandrum and other major seminaries; general counsellor of his Institute and postulator of the cause of beatification of the Servant of God Mar Ivanios; and chancellor of the major archepiscopal Curia of the Syrian Malankara Church.

He was elected bishop on 25 January 2010, was assigned the titular see of Igilgili, and received episcopal consecration on 13 March of the same year.

On 26 March 2015, he was appointed the first Apostolic Exarch of Saint Ephrem of Khadki of the Syro-Malankars. On November 23, 2019, simultaneously with the elevation of the exarchate into an eparchy, he was appointed as first bishop of the circumscription.

In addition to English and Malayalam, he speaks Italian, German and Hindi.
