Resignation of bishop of Novaliches, Philippines, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Novaliches, Philippines, presented by His Excellency Msgr. Antonio R. Tobias.

The Pope has appointed as bishop of Novaliches, Philippines, the Rev. Roberto O. Gaa, of the clergy of the archdiocese of Manila, currently rector of the Holy Apostle Senior Seminary of the same archdiocese.

The bishop-elect was born in Manila in 1962 and was ordained a priest for the same archdiocese in 2000. He holds a licentiate in spirituality from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.

He has served in a number of pastoral roles, including parish vicar, parish priest, and spiritual director and dean of studies at the Holy Apostles Senior Seminary of Makati City. In 2008 he became rector of the same seminary and member of the presbyteral council of the archdiocese.

 

Appointment of bishop of Gaborone, Botswana

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Gaborone, Botswana, H.E. Msgr. Franklyn Atese Nubuasah, S.V.D., currently bishop of Francistown.

 

Appointment of auxiliary bishop of Cape Town, South Africa

The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Cape Town, South Africa, the Rev. Fr. Sylvester David, O.M.I., currently vicar general of the archdiocese of Durban, assigning him the titular see of Gunugo.

The Rev. Fr. Sylvester David, O.M.I., was born in 1953 in Durban. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in counselling psychology from the University of South Africa and a licentiate in biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. In 1984 he entered the Congregation of Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He gave his perpetual vows on 15 February 1988, and was ordained a priest in 1991.

Since ordination he has held a number of pastoral roles, including parish vicar, parish priest, formator at the Cebula House of Formation, and lecturer at and subsequently president of the Saint Joseph’s Theological Institute. He is currently vicar general of the archdiocese of Durban.

 

Appointment of members of the Congregation for Catholic Education

The Holy Father has appointed as members of the Congregation for Catholic Education the Eminent Cardinals Joseph William Tobin, archbishop of Newark; Désiré Tsarahazana, archbishop of Toamasina; Luis Francisco Ladaria Ferrer, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith; and Msgr. Joseph Ðình Ðúc Ðao, bishop of Xuân Lôc.
