Resignation of archbishop of Lucca, Italy, and appointment of new archbishop

The Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Lucca, Italy, presented by H.E. Msgr. Benvenuto Italo Castellani.

The Pope has appointed as archbishop of the archdiocese of Lucca, Italy, H.E. Msgr. Paolo Giulietti, currently auxiliary bishop and vicar general of the archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve.

H.E. Msgr. Paolo Giulietti

H.E. Msgr. Paolo Giulietti was born in Perugia, archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve, on 1 January 1964. After obtaining his high school diploma in Perugia, he attended courses in the Faculty of Architecture in Florence for two years. He then entered the Pontifical Regional Semianry of Umbria, attending courses in philosophy and theology at the Theological Institute of Assisi. He subsequently continued his studies at the Pontifical Salesian University, where he obtained a licentiate in youth pastoral ministry. He received priestly ordination on 29 September 1991 and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve.

From 1991 to 2001 he served as parish vicar of San Sisto in Perugia and assistant for Catholic Action youth and the volunteers engaged in accompanying prisoners in provisional freedom; from 2001 to 2007 he was director of the National Office of Youth Pastoral Care of the Italian Episcopal Conference; from 2007 to 2010 he carried out the ministry of parish priest of San Bartolomeo Apostolo in Ponte San Giovanni, Perugia; and since 2010 he has held the role of vicar general of the same archdiocese.

H.E. Msgr. Giulietti was also moderator of the Curia, from 1998 he was canon of the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence in Perugia, and has been member of the college of consultors and the presbyteral council, coordinator and rapporteur of the Regional Presbyteral Commission of the Umbrian Episcopal Conference, regional head of Itineraries of Faith and spiritual assistant of the Confraternity of San Jacopo di Compostella. In 2005 he was named chaplain of His Holiness.

He was appointed to the see of Termini Imerese and auxiliary bishop of Perugia-Città della Pieve on 30 May 2014, and received episcopal consecration on 10 August of the same year.
