Appointment of Deputy Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archive

The Holy Father Francis has appointed as deputy prefect of the Vatican Secret Archive the Distinguished Dr. Paolo Vian, currently Scriptor latinus and director of the Department of Manuscripts of the Vatican Apostolic Library.

Dr. Paolo Vian

Born in Rome on 25 August 1957, Dr. Paolo Vian obtained a diploma from the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archivistics in 1978 and obtained a degree in letters from the University of Rome in 1979. He entered the service of the Vatican Apostolic Library in 1983, gradually reaching positions of responsibility, and in 1999 was appointed as Scriptor latinus and in 203, director of the Department of Manuscripts.

From 1989 to 1998 he taught Codicology at the aforementioned Vatican School, and from 1995 to 2005, medieval palaeography in the higher School of Franciscan and Medieval Studies at the then Pontifical Antonianum Athenaeum, now the Pontifical Antonianum University in Rome.

He is a member of the International Society of Franciscan Studies, and in 1993 joined the editorial board of the “Rivista di Storia della Chiesa in Italia” (“Journal of the History of the Church in Italy”). Since \996 he has served as correspondent member (then scientific correspondent) of the National Institute of Roman Studies and, since 1997, correspondent member of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. Since 2019 he has been a member of the scientific committee of Archivum Franciscanum Historicum. He is the author of numerous scientific publications.

The Pope has appointed as members of the Scientific Council of the Holy See Agency for the Evaluation and Promotion of Quality in Ecclesiastical Universities and Faculties (AVEPRO), the Rev: Salvatore Loiero, lecturer in theology at the University of Fribourg; Mauro Mantovani, S.D.B., rector of the Pontifical Salesian University and president of the CRUPR; the Rev. Fr. Đình Anh Nhue Nguyén, O.F.M. Conv., president of the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Saint Bonaventure; the Rev. Sr. Mary Melone, S.F.A., rector of the Pontifical Antonianum University; and the Distinguished Drs. Isabel Capeloa Gil, president of the FIUC; Caty Duykaerts, director of the AEQES; and Fiona Hunter, associate director of the CHEI-Catholic University of Milan.
