Appointment of auxiliary of Orange in California, United States of America

The Holy Father Francis has appointed as auxiliary bishop of Orange in California, United States of America, the Rev. Thanh Thai Nguyen, of the clergy of the diocese of Saint Augustine, currently parish priest of the “Saint Joseph” parish in Jacksonville, assigning him the titular see of Acalisso.

Rev. Thanh Thai Nguyen

The Rev. Thanh Thai Nguyen was born on 7 April 1953 in Nha Trang in Vietnam. He entered the Congregation of Saint Joseph, carrying out his philosophical studies at the Saint Joseph Seminary and the Da Lat University in Da Lat, Vietnam. In 1975 the Congregation was abolished by the communist regime. He fled Vietnam in 1979 and arrived in the United States in 1980 in Hartford, Connecticut. After studying at the Hartford State Technical College, he worked as a mathematics and science teacher at the Hartford public schools (1981-1984).

In 1984 he entered the Missionaries of Our Lady of “La Salette”, and completed his ecclesiastical studies at the “Merrimack College” (1984-1986) and the Weston School of Theology” (1987-1990) in Massachusetts. He gave his solemn vows on 19 September 1990. He was ordained a priest on 11 May 1991 for the Missionaries of Our Lady of “La Salette”. Since priestly ordination he has served as vicar of the “Saint Thomas the Apostle” parish in Smyrna, Georgia (1991-1994), of the “Saint Ann” parish in Marietta, Georgia (1994-1996), and the “Christ the King” parish in Jacksonville, Florida (1996-1999). In 1999 he was incardinated in the diocese of Saint Augustine. As a diocesan priest he continued as parish vicar in the “Christ the King” parish in Jacksonville (1999-2001). He then served as pastor of the same parish (2001-2014) and of the “Saint Joseph” parish in Jacksonville (since 2014). He is also a member of the College of Consultors and the Presbyteral Council.
