Vatican City, 1 June 2016 – The Holy Father has appointed:
- Fr. Joseph P. Nguyen as bishop of Kamloops (area 120,000, population 421,000, Catholics 58,700, priests 20, permanent deacons 1, religious 14), Canada. The bishop-elect was born in Vietnam in 1957 and was ordained a priest in 1992. He has served in a number of pastoral roles in the archdiocese of Vancouver, Canada, including parish vicar, parish priest and director of priestly vocations. He is currently vicar general and member of the presbyteral council, College of Consultors, the Archdiocesan Finance Committee and the Advisory Committee for the Permanent Diaconate. He succeeds Bishop David J. Monroe, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same diocese upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father.
- Msgr. Evaristo Pascoal Spengler, O.F.M., as bishop prelate of Marajó (area 79,043, population 340,600, Catholics 282,698, priests 21, religious 33), Brazil. The bishop-elect was born in Gaspar, Brazil in 1959, gave his religious vows in 1982 and was ordained a priest in 1984. He holds a licentiate in biblical exegesis and has served in a number of offices, including parish vicar, deputy master of students at Duque de Caxias-RJ., assistant at the "Santo Antônio" convent in Rio de Janeiro, missionary and parish vicar in Angola, and provincial definitor. He is currently vice minister of the "Imaculada Conceição do Brasil" Franciscan province in São Paulo. He succeeds Bishop José Luiz Azcona Hermoso, O.A.R., whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same territorial prelature upon reaching the age limit was accepted by the Holy Father.
