Mercoledì 24 giugno, alle ore 11.00 presso la Galleria Lapidaria dei Musei Vaticani, si terrà la presentazione del grande progetto di restauro dell’ala ovest della Seconda Loggia, la cosiddetta Loggia di Raffaello. Per cinque anni un cantiere di restauro interesserà l’ala ovest della Loggia di Raffaello, situata al secondo piano del Palazzo Apostolico e affacciata sul cortile di San Damaso. Progettata dall’Urbinate e decorata tra il 1517 e il 1519 dai suoi allievi per papa Leone X de’ Medici (1513-1521), fu da subito considerata una delle più alte espressioni dell’arte rinascimentale applicata all’architettura e costituisce ancora oggi una delle testimonianze più raffinate del linguaggio figurativo del primo Cinquecento. Un’équipe di oltre venti restauratori dei Musei Vaticani interverrà sulla delicata e mirabile superficie decorata (circa 1.300 metri quadri) della Loggia raffaellesca.

THE RESTORATION OF THE

LOGGIA OF RAPHAEL

Vatican City. Wednesday 24 June, at 11.00 a.m. the Lapidary Gallery of the Vatican Museums will host the presentation of the major restoration project of the west wing of the Second Loggia, the so-called Loggia of Raphael. Over the next five years a restoration site will be located in the west wing of the Loggia of Raphael, on the second floor of the Apostolic Palace overlooking the Courtyard of Saint Damasus. Conceived by Raphael and decorated between 1517 and 1519 by his workshop for Pope Leo X de’ Medici (1513-1521), it was immediately considered one of the highest expressions of Renaissance art applied to architecture. It is still today one of the most refined testimonies of the figurative language of the early 16th century. A team of more than twenty restorers from the Vatican Museums will undertake the restoration of the delicate and extraordinary decorated surface (ca. 1,300 square metres) of the Raphaelesque Loggia.
