Conclusa la visita al Moria refugee camp, il Santo Padre Francesco, Sua Santità Bartolomeo, Patriarca Ecumenico di Costantinopoli, e Sua Beatitudine Ieronymos, Arcivescovo di Atene e di tutta la Grecia, hanno raggiunto in minibus il porto di Mytilene.
Alle ore 14, presso il Presidio della Guardia Costiera, si è tenuto l’incontro con la cittadinanza e con la piccola comunità cattolica dell’isola.
Papa Francesco ha rivolto alla popolazione un discorso in lingua italiana (intercalato dalla traduzione in greco). Successivamente è stata fatta memoria delle vittime delle migrazioni: i tre leader religiosi hanno recitato ciascuno una preghiera e, dopo un minuto di silenzio, hanno lanciato in mare tre corone di alloro consegnate loro da tre bambini.

cari fratelli e sorelle,
da quando Lesbo è diventata un approdo per tanti migranti in cerca di pace e di dignità, ho sentito il desiderio di venire qui. Oggi ringrazio Dio che me lo ha concesso. E ringrazio il Signor Presidente Pavlopoulos di avermi invitato, insieme con il Patriarca Bartolomeo e l’Arcivescovo Ieronymos.
Vorrei esprimere la mia ammirazione al popolo greco che, nonostante le gravi difficoltà da affrontare, ha saputo tenere aperti i cuori e le porte. Tante persone semplici hanno messo a disposizione il poco che avevano per condividerlo con chi era privo di tutto. Dio saprà ricompensare questa generosità, come quella di altre nazioni circostanti, che fin dai primi momenti hanno accolto con grande disponibilità moltissimi migranti forzati.
E’ pure benedetta la presenza generosa di tanti volontari e di numerose associazioni, che, insieme alle diverse istituzioni pubbliche, hanno portato e stanno portando il loro aiuto, esprimendo nel concreto una vicinanza fraterna.
Oggi vorrei rinnovare un accorato appello alla responsabilità e alla solidarietà di fronte a una situazione tanto drammatica. Molti profughi che si trovano su quest’isola e in diverse parti della Grecia stanno vivendo in condizioni critiche, in un clima di ansia e di paura, a volte di disperazione per i disagi materiali e per l’incertezza del futuro. Le preoccupazioni delle istituzioni e della gente, qui in Grecia come in altri Paesi d’Europa, sono comprensibili e legittime. E tuttavia non bisogna mai dimenticare che i migranti, prima di essere numeri, sono persone, sono volti, nomi, storie. L’Europa è la patria dei diritti umani, e chiunque metta piede in terra europea dovrebbe poterlo sperimentare, così si renderà più consapevole di doverli a sua volta rispettare e difendere. Purtroppo alcuni, tra cui molti bambini, non sono riusciti nemmeno ad arrivare: hanno perso la vita in mare, vittime di viaggi disumani e sottoposti alle angherie di vili aguzzini.
Voi, abitanti di Lesbo, dimostrate che in queste terre, culla di civiltà, pulsa ancora il cuore di un’umanità che sa riconoscere prima di tutto il fratello e la sorella, un’umanità che vuole costruire ponti e rifugge dall’illusione di innalzare recinti per sentirsi più sicura. Infatti le barriere creano divisioni, anziché aiutare il vero progresso dei popoli, e le divisioni prima o poi provocano scontri.
Per essere veramente solidali con chi è costretto a fuggire dalla propria terra, bisogna lavorare per rimuovere le cause di questa drammatica realtà: non basta limitarsi a inseguire l’emergenza del momento, ma occorre sviluppare politiche di ampio respiro, non unilaterali. Prima di tutto è necessario costruire la pace là dove la guerra ha portato distruzione e morte, e impedire che questo cancro si diffonda altrove. Per questo bisogna contrastare con fermezza la proliferazione e il traffico delle armi e le loro trame spesso occulte; vanno privati di ogni sostegno quanti perseguono progetti di odio e di violenza. Va invece promossa senza stancarsi la collaborazione tra i Paesi, le Organizzazioni internazionali e le istituzioni umanitarie, non isolando ma sostenendo chi fronteggia l’emergenza. In questa prospettiva rinnovo l’auspicio che abbia successo il Primo Vertice Umanitario Mondiale che avrà luogo a Istanbul il mese prossimo.
Tutto questo si può fare solo insieme: insieme si possono e si devono cercare soluzioni degne dell’uomo alla complessa questione dei profughi. E in questo è indispensabile anche il contributo delle Chiese e delle Comunità religiose. La mia presenza qui insieme al Patriarca Bartolomeo e all’Arcivescovo Ieronymos sta a testimoniare la nostra volontà di continuare a collaborare perché questa sfida epocale diventi occasione non di scontro, ma di crescita della civiltà dell’amore.
Cari fratelli e sorelle, di fronte alle tragedie che feriscono l’umanità, Dio non è indifferente, non è distante. Egli è il nostro Padre, che ci sostiene nel costruire il bene e respingere il male. Non solo ci sostiene, ma in Gesù ci ha mostrato la via della pace. Di fronte al male del mondo, Egli si è fatto nostro servo, e col suo servizio di amore ha salvato il mondo. Questo è il vero potere che genera la pace. Solo chi serve con amore costruisce la pace. Il servizio fa uscire da sé stessi e si prende cura degli altri, non lascia che le persone e le cose vadano in rovina, ma sa custodirle, superando la spessa coltre dell’indifferenza che annebbia le menti e i cuori.
Grazie a voi, perché siete custodi di umanità, perché vi prendete teneramente cura della carne di Cristo, che soffre nel più piccolo fratello affamato e forestiero, e che voi avete accolto (cfr Mt 25,35).

φίλτατοι αδελφοί και αδελφές,
Από τότε που η Λέσβος έγινε πέρασμα για πολλούς αποδημούντες, οι οποίοι αποζητούν την ειρήνη και την αξιοπρέπεια, αισθάνθηκα την επιθυμία να έλθω εδώ. Και ευχαριστώ τον Πρόεδρο της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας κ. Προκόπιο Παυλόπουλο διότι με προσκάλεσε, από κοινού με τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη κ. Βαρθολομαίο και τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο κ. Ιερώνυμο.
Θα ήθελα να εκφράσω τον θαυμασμό μου για τον Ελληνικό λαό, ο οποίος, παρά τις σοβαρές δυσκολίες που έχει να αντιμετωπίσει, μπόρεσε να κρατήσει ανοιχτή την καρδιά και διάπλατες τις πόρτες. Πάρα πολλοί απλοί άνθρωποι έβαλαν προς διάθεση εκείνο το λίγο που είχαν, για να το μοιραστούν με όποιον ήταν στερημένος από τα πάντα. Ο Κύριος θα ξέρει να ανταποδώσει αυτή τη γενναιοδωρία, όπως κι εκείνη των άλλων γειτονικών λαών, οι οποίοι ήδη από την πρώτη στιγμή υποδέχθηκαν με μεγάλη διαθεσιμότητα πάμπολλους συνανθρώπους που εξαναγκάστηκαν να πάρουν τον δρόμο της προσφυγιάς.
Είναι επίσης ευλογημένη η γενναιόδωρη παρουσία πολλών εθελοντών και πολυάριθμων οργανώσεων, που από κοινού με τους ποικίλους δημόσιους θεσμούς προσέφεραν και συνεχίζουν να προσφέρουν τη βοήθειά τους, εκφράζοντας κατά τρόπο συγκεκριμένο την αδελφική τους εγγύτητα.
Σήμερα θα ήθελα να ανανεώσω την από καρδίας έκκληση για υπευθυνότητα και αλληλεγγύη μπροστά σε μία τόσο δραματική κατάσταση. Πολλοί πρόσφυγες, που βρίσκονται πάνω σε αυτό το νησί και σε διάφορα μέρη της Ελλάδας, διαβιώνουν σε κρίσιμες συνθήκες, σε ένα κλίμα άγχους και φόβου, ενίοτε απελπισίας λόγω των υλικών ελλείψεων και της αβεβαιότητας για το μέλλον.
Oι ανησυχίες των θεσμών και του κόσμου, εδώ στην Ελλάδα όπως και σε άλλες Χώρες της Ευρώπης, είναι κατανοητές και νόμιμες. Όμως, παρόλα αυτά, δεν πρέπει να ξεχνούμε ότι οι πρόσφυγες και οι μετανάστες, πριν ακόμη να είναι αριθμοί, είναι άνθρωποι, είναι πρόσωπα, ονόματα, ιστορίες. Η Ευρώπη είναι η πατρίδα των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, και όποιος πατάει το πόδι του σε γη ευρωπαϊκή θα έπρεπε να μπορεί να το δοκιμάσει αυτό: έτσι θα του γίνει συνείδηση πως θα πρέπει και αυτός με τη σειρά του να τα σέβεται και να τα υπερασπίζεται. Δυστυχώς μερικοί, μεταξύ των οποίων πολλά παιδιά, δεν κατάφεραν ούτε καν να φθάσουν: έχασαν τη ζωή τους στη θάλασσα, θύματα απάνθρωπων ταξιδιών και υποβεβλημένοι στις κακουχίες δειλών βασανιστών.
Εσείς, κάτοικοι της Λέσβου, αποδεικνύετε πως σε αυτά τα χώματα, που είναι κοιτίδα πολιτισμού, χτυπάει ακόμη η καρδιά μιας ανθρωπότητας που ξέρει να αναγνωρίζει πρώτα απ' όλα τον αδελφό και την αδελφή, μιας ανθρωπότητας που ξέρει να χτίζει γέφυρες, και αρνείται να βρει καταφύγιο στην ψευδαίσθηση πως υψώνοντας φράχτες θα νιώσει πιο ασφαλής. Πράγματι, τα φράγματα οδηγούν σε διαιρέσεις αντί να βοηθούν την αληθινή πρόοδο των λαών, και οι διαιρέσεις αργά ή γρήγορα προκαλούν συγκρούσεις.
Για να είμαστε όντως αλληλέγγυοι με όποιον είναι καταναγκασμένος να εγκαταλείψει την πατρική του γη, είναι επιτακτικό να εργαστούμε για να εξαλειφθούν οι αιτίες αυτής της δραματικής πραγματικότητας: δεν αρκεί να περιοριστούμε στο να επιδιώκουμε την επίλυση των επειγουσών αναγκών της στιγμής, αλλά χρειάζεται να αναπτύξουμε πολιτικές ευρείας αναπνοής, όχι μονόπλευρες. Πρώτα απ' όλα είναι αναγκαίο να χτίσουμε την ειρήνη εκεί όπου ο πόλεμος έφερε καταστροφή και θάνατο, και να εμποδίσουμε αυτός ο καρκίνος να κάνει μετάσταση και αλλού. Γι' αυτό πρέπει να αγωνιστούμε σθεναρά εναντίον της ανεξέλεκτης παραγωγής και διακίνησης όπλων και των ραδιουργιών που συχνά κρύβονται πίσω από αυτές. Πρέπει να χάσουν κάθε υποστήριξη όσοι επιδιώκουν σχέδια μίσους και βίας. Αντιθέτως πρέπει να προωθείται ανελλειπώς η συνεργασία μεταξύ των Χωρών, των διεθνών Οργανισμών και των ανθρωπιστικών θεσμών, όχι απομονώνοντας, αλλά υποστηρίζοντας αυτόν που αντιμετωπίζει την επείγουσα κατάσταση. Υπό αυτή την προοπτική ανανεώνω την ευχή να έχει επιτυχία η Πρώτη Παγκόσμια Ανθρωπιστική Σύνοδος Κορυφής, που θα λάβει χώρα στην Κωνσταντινούπολη τον ερχόμενο μήνα.
Όλα αυτά μπορούν να γίνουν μόνο από κοινού: από κοινού μπορούν και πρέπει να αναζητηθούν λύσεις άξιες του ανθρώπου στο σύνθετο πρόβλημα των προσφύγων. Και σε αυτό είναι απαραίτητη και η συμβολή των Εκκλησιών και των θρησκευτικών Κοινοτήτων. Η παρουσία μου εδώ, από κοινού με τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίο και τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Ιερώνυμο, έγκειται στο να δώσουμε μαρτυρία της θέλησής μας να συνεχίσουμε να συνεργαζόμαστε, ώστε αυτή η ιστορική πρόκληση να γίνει αφορμή όχι σύγκρουσης, αλλά ανάπτυξης του πολιτισμού της αγάπης.
Φίλτατοι αδελφοί και αδελφές, μπροστά στις τραγωδίες που πληγώνουν την ανθρωπότητα, ο Θεός δεν είναι αδιάφορος, δεν είναι απόμακρος. Αυτός είναι ο Πατέρας μας, ο Οποίος μας ενισχύει στην οικοδόμηση του αγαθού και στην απώθηση του κακού. Όχι μόνο μας ενισχύει, αλλά στον Ιησού μάς έδειξε την οδό της ειρήνης. Μπροστά στο κακό που υπάρχει στον κόσμο, Αυτός έγινε δούλος μας, και με την αγαπητική του διακονία έσωσε τον κόσμο. Αυτή είναι η αληθινή εξουσία που γεννά την ειρήνη. Μόνο όποιος υπηρετεί με αγάπη οικοδομεί την ειρήνη. Η υπηρεσία μάς κάνει να βγούμε από τον εαυτό μας και να φροντίσουμε τους άλλους, δεν αφήνει να οδηγηθούν σε καταστροφή τα πρόσωπα και τα πράγματα, αλλά ξέρει να τα διαφυλάττει, διαπερνώντας το πυκνό στρώμα της αδιαφορίας που συσκοτίζει το νου και την καρδιά.
Ευχαριστώ εσάς, επειδή είστε φύλακες ανθρωπιάς, επειδή φροντίζετε με τρυφερότητα τη σάρκα του Χριστού, ο Οποίος υποφέρει στον πιο ελάχιστο αδελφό που πεινάει και είναι ξένος, και που εσείς υποδεχτήκατε (πρβλ. Μτ 25,35).

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I have wanted to visit Lesvos ever since migrants arrived here seeking peace and dignity. Today I give thanks to God who has granted me this wish. I express my appreciation to President Pavlopoulos for inviting me, together with Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Ieronymos.
I wish to express my admiration for the Greek people who, despite their own great difficulties, have kept open their hearts and their doors. Many ordinary men and women have made available the little they have and shared it with those who have lost everything. God will repay this generosity, and that of other surrounding nations who from the beginning have welcomed with great openness the large numbers of people forced to migrate.
Your island is blessed by the generous presence of many volunteers and various associations that, together with public institutions, have offered and continue to offer their assistance, visibly expressing their fraternal concern.
Today, I renew my heartfelt plea for responsibility and solidarity in the face of this tragic situation. Many migrants who have come to this island and other places in Greece are living in trying conditions, in an atmosphere of anxiety and fear, at times even of despair, due to material hardship and uncertainty for the future.
The worries expressed by institutions and people, both in Greece and in other European countries, are understandable and legitimate. We must never forget, however, that migrants, rather than simply being a statistic, are first of all persons who have faces, names and individual stories. Europe is the homeland of human rights, and whoever sets foot on European soil ought to sense this, and thus become more aware of the duty to respect and defend those rights. Unfortunately, some, including many infants, could not even make it to these shores: they died at sea, victims of unsafe and inhumane means of transport, prey to unscrupulous thugs.
You, the residents of Lesvos, show that in these lands, the cradle of civilization, the heart of humanity continues to beat; a humanity that before all else recognizes others as brothers and sisters, a humanity that wants to build bridges and recoils from the idea of putting up walls to make us feel safer. In reality, barriers create divisions instead of promoting the true progress of peoples, and divisions sooner or later lead to confrontations.
To be truly united with those forced to flee their homelands, we need to eliminate the causes of this dramatic situation: it is not enough to limit ourselves to responding to emergencies as they arise. Instead, we need to encourage political efforts that are broader in scope and multilateral. It is necessary, above all, to build peace where war has brought destruction and death, and to stop this scourge from spreading. To do this, resolute efforts must be made to counter the arms trade and arms trafficking, and the often hidden machinations associated with them; those who carry out acts of hatred and violence must be denied all means of support. Cooperation among nations, international organizations and humanitarian agencies must be tirelessly promoted, and those on the frontlines must be assisted, not kept at a distance. In this regard, I reiterate my hope that the First World Humanitarian Summit being held in Istanbul next month will prove productive.
All of this can be achieved only if we work together: solutions to the complex issue of refugees which are worthy of humanity can and must be sought. In this regard, the contribution of Churches and religious communities is indispensable. My presence here, along with that of Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Ieronymos, is a sign of our willingness to continue to cooperate so that the challenges we face today will not lead to conflict, but rather to the growth of the civilization of love.
Dear brothers and sisters, God is neither indifferent to, nor distant from, the tragedies that wound humanity. He is our Father, who helps us to work for good and to reject evil. Not only does he come to our aid, but in Jesus he has shown us the way of peace. Before the evil of this world, he made himself our servant, and by his service of love he saved the world. This is the true power that brings about peace. Only those who serve with love build peace. Service makes us go beyond ourselves and care for others. It does not stand by while people and things are destroyed, but rather it protects them; service overcomes that dense pall of indifference that clouds hearts and minds.
Thank you, for you are guardians of humanity, for you care with tenderness for the body of Christ, who suffers in the least of his brothers and sisters, the hungry and the stranger, whom you have welcomed (cf. Mt 25:35).

Desde que Lesbos se ha convertido en un lugar de llegada para muchos emigrantes en busca de paz y dignidad, he tenido el deseo de venir aquí. Hoy, agradezco a Dios que me lo haya concedido. Y agradezco al Presidente Paulopoulos haberme invitado, junto al Patriarca Bartolomé y al Arzobispo Hieronymos.
Quisiera expresar mi admiración por el pueblo griego que, a pesar de las graves dificultades que tiene que afrontar, ha sabido mantener abierto su corazón y sus puertas. Muchas personas sencillas han ofrecido lo poco que tenían para compartirlo con los que carecían de todo. Dios recompensará esta generosidad, así como la de otras naciones vecinas, que desde el primer momento han acogido con gran disponibilidad a muchos emigrantes forzados.
Es también una bendición la presencia generosa de tantos voluntarios y de numerosas asociaciones, las cuales, junto con las distintas instituciones públicas, han llevado y están llevando su ayuda, manifestando de una manera concreta su fraterna cercanía.
Quisiera renovar hoy el vehemente llamamiento a la responsabilidad y a la solidaridad frente a una situación tan dramática. Muchos de los refugiados que se encuentran en esta isla y en otras partes de Grecia están viviendo en unas condiciones críticas, en un clima de ansiedad y de miedo, a veces de desesperación, por las dificultades materiales y la incertidumbre del futuro.
La preocupación de las instituciones y de la gente, tanto aquí en Grecia como en otros países de Europa, es comprensible y legítima. Sin embargo, no debemos olvidar que los emigrantes, antes que números son personas, son rostros, nombres, historias. Europa es la patria de los derechos humanos, y cualquiera que ponga pie en suelo europeo debería poder experimentarlo. Así será más consciente de deberlos a su vez respetar y defender. Por desgracia, algunos, entre ellos muchos niños, no han conseguido ni siquiera llegar: han perdido la vida en el mar, víctimas de un viaje inhumano y sometidos a las vejaciones de verdugos infames.
Vosotros, habitantes de Lesbos, demostráis que en estas tierras, cuna de la civilización, sigue latiendo el corazón de una humanidad que sabe reconocer por encima de todo al hermano y a la hermana, una humanidad que quiere construir puentes y rechaza la ilusión de levantar muros con el fin de sentirse más seguros. En efecto, las barreras crean división, en lugar de ayudar al verdadero progreso de los pueblos, y las divisiones, antes o después, provocan enfrentamientos.
Para ser realmente solidarios con quien se ve obligado a huir de su propia tierra, hay que esforzarse en eliminar las causas de esta dramática realidad: no basta con limitarse a salir al paso de la emergencia del momento, sino que hay que desarrollar políticas de gran alcance, no unilaterales. En primer lugar, es necesario construir la paz allí donde la guerra ha traído muerte y destrucción, e impedir que este cáncer se propague a otras partes. Para ello, hay que oponerse firmemente a la proliferación y al tráfico de armas, y sus tramas a menudo ocultas; hay que dejar sin apoyos a todos los que conciben proyectos de odio y de violencia. Por el contrario, se debe promover sin descanso la colaboración entre los países, las organizaciones internacionales y las instituciones humanitarias, no aislando sino sosteniendo a los que afrontan la emergencia. En esta perspectiva, renuevo mi esperanza de que tenga éxito la primera Cumbre Humanitaria Mundial, que tendrá lugar en Estambul el próximo mes.
Todo esto sólo se puede hacer juntos: juntos se pueden y se deben buscar soluciones dignas del hombre a la compleja cuestión de los refugiados. Y para ello es también indispensable la aportación de las Iglesias y Comunidades religiosas. Mi presencia aquí, junto con el Patriarca Bartolomé y el Arzobispo Hieronymos, es un testimonio de nuestra voluntad de seguir cooperando para que este desafío crucial se convierta en una ocasión, no de confrontación, sino de crecimiento de la civilización del amor.
Queridos hermanos y hermanas, ante las tragedias que golpean a la humanidad, Dios no es indiferente, no está lejos. Él es nuestro Padre, que nos sostiene en la construcción del bien y en el rechazo al mal. No sólo nos apoya, sino que, en Jesús, nos ha indicado el camino de la paz. Frente al mal del mundo, él se hizo nuestro servidor, y con su servicio de amor ha salvado al mundo. Esta es la verdadera fuerza que genera la paz. Sólo el que sirve con amor construye la paz. El servicio nos hace salir de nosotros mismos para cuidar a los demás, no deja que las personas y las cosas se destruyan, sino que sabe protegerlas, superando la dura costra de la indiferencia que nubla la mente y el corazón.
Gracias a vosotros, porque sois los custodios de la humanidad, porque os hacéis cargo con ternura de la carne de Cristo, que sufre en el más pequeño de los hermanos, hambriento y forastero, y que vosotros habéis acogido (cf. Mt 25,35).
