Mercoledì 17 novembre 2010, alle ore 17.00, presso la Sala San Pio X, in via della Conciliazione 5, a Roma, il Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani celebrerà con un atto commemorativo pubblico il 50° anniversario dell’istituzione del Segretariato per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani. A tale evento, presieduto da Sua Eccellenza Monsignor Kurt Koch, Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani, interverranno Sua Eminenza il Cardinale Walter Kasper, Presidente Emerito, Sua Grazia il Dott. Rowan Williams, Arcivescovo di Canterbury, e Sua Eminenza il Metropolita di Pergamo Ioannis (Zizioulas), del Patriarcato ecumenico di Costantinopoli.
Il 5 giugno del 1960, giorno di Pentecoste, con il Motu Proprio «Superno Dei Nutu», il Beato Giovanni XXIII istituiva insieme alle undici commissioni che avrebbero preparato il Concilio, un Segretariato per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani. Il primo Presidente al quale Papa Giovanni XXIII affidò la responsabilità del Segretariato fu il Cardinale Agostino Bea. Al Cardinale Bea sono poi succeduti il Cardinale Johann Willebrands, il Cardinale Edward Idris Cassidy, il Cardinale Walter Kasper e, dal 1 luglio 2010, l’Arcivescovo Kurt Koch. Nel 1988 Papa Giovanni Paolo II con la Costituzione apostolica «Pastor Bonus» cambiò il nome del Segretariato in Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani. Nel corso degli anni, il Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani ha curato i rapporti con il vasto mondo ecumenico sia a livello multilaterale, che attraverso contatti e dialoghi bilaterali con molte Chiese e Comunità cristiane.
La data dell’atto commemorativo è stata volutamente fatta coincidere con la Sessione Plenaria del Pontificio Consiglio per la Promozione dell’Unità dei Cristiani, che si terrà dal 15 al 19 novembre p.v. e si concentrerà sul tema: «Verso una nuova tappa del dialogo ecumenico». Questo sguardo al passato, rivolto al momento dell’istituzione ed al cammino intrapreso fino ad oggi, offrirà non solo l’occasione di esprimere gratitudine a Dio per coloro che hanno contribuito a far avanzare l’ecumenismo e per gli abbondanti frutti che sono stati già raccolti, ma permetterà anche di suscitare un rinnovato interesse per la causa dell’unità e ribadire la ferma volontà di proseguire il cammino verso la piena comunione di tutti i cristiani, affrontando con fiducia le sfide, anche nuove, che si presentano.

At 5 p.m. on Wednesday 17 November, at the Sala San Pio X, at Via della Conciliazione 5, Rome, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity will hold a public commemoration to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. The event will be presided by Archbishop Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, and will be attended by Cardinal Walter Kasper, president emeritus, His Grace Rowan Williams, archbishop of Canterbury, and His Eminence Metropolitan Pergamo Ioannis (Zizioulas) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
On 5 June 1960, the day of Pentecost, with his Motu Proprio «Superno Dei Nutu», Blessed John XXIII established, along with the eleven preparatory commissions for Vatican Council II, a Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. The first president to whom Pope John XXIII entrusted responsibility for the Secretariat was Cardinal Agostino Bea, who was later succeeded by Cardinal Johann Willebrands, Cardinal Edward Idris Cassidy, Cardinal Walter Kasper and, as of 1 July 2010, Archbishop Kurt Koch. In 1988 Pope John Paul II, with his Apostolic Constitution «Pastor Bonus», changed the name of the Secretariat to that of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Over the course of the years, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity has administered relations with the vast world of ecumenism, both at a multilateral level and through bilateral contacts and dialogue with many Churches and Christian communities.
The date for the commemorative celebrations was deliberately chosen to coincide with the plenary session of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, which will be held from 15 to 19 November and will focus on the theme: «Towards a new stage of ecumenical dialogue». This review of the past, focusing on the moment of foundation and on the road travelled thus far, will provide an occasion to give thanks to God for those people who have helped to advance the cause of ecumenism, and for the abundant fruits that have been produced. It will likewise help to arouse renewed interest in the cause of unity and underline the firm resolve to continue the journey towards the full communion of all Christians, confidently facing the new challenges that arise.
