Oggi, nel Palazzo Apostolico di Castel Gandolfo, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha ricevuto in Udienza Sua Eccellenza il Sig. Shimon Peres, Presidente d’Israele, che ha incontrato anche l’Em.mo Segretario di Stato, Card. Tarcisio Bertone, accompagnato dall’Ecc.mo Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati, Mons. Dominique Mamberti.

Durante i colloqui, svoltisi in un clima di cordialità, è stato ricordato il Pellegrinaggio che Sua Santità ha compiuto in Terra Santa nel 2009.

Circa la ripresa dei contatti diretti tra Israeliani e Palestinesi, in programma oggi a Washington, si è auspicato che essa aiuti a raggiungere un accordo rispettoso delle legittime aspirazioni dei due Popoli e capace di portare una pace stabile in Terra Santa e in tutta la Regione. E’ stata quindi ribadita la condanna di ogni forma di violenza e la necessità di garantire a tutte le popolazioni dell'area migliori condizioni di vita. Non è mancato un riferimento al dialogo interreligioso e uno sguardo d’insieme alla situazione internazionale.

I colloqui hanno permesso di esaminare anche i rapporti tra lo Stato d’Israele e la Santa Sede e quelli delle Autorità statali con le comunità cattoliche locali. Al riguardo, si è sottolineato il significato del tutto particolare della presenza di queste ultime nella Terra Santa e il contributo che esse offrono al bene comune della società, anche attraverso le scuole cattoliche. Infine, si è preso atto dei risultati raggiunti della Commissione bilaterale di lavoro, impegnata da anni nell’elaborazione di un Accordo relativo a questioni di carattere economico e si è auspicata una rapida conclusione del medesimo.

Today, in the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo, the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI received in Audience His Excellency Mr Shimon Peres, President of Israel, who also met with the Cardinal Secretary of State, His Eminence Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and the Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Dominique Mamberti.

During the cordial discussions, the Pilgrimage of His Holiness to the Holy Land in May 2009 was recalled.

Concerning the renewal of direct contacts between Israelis and Palestinians, scheduled for today in Washington, the hope was expressed that this may assist in reaching an agreement that is respectful of the legitimate aspirations of the two Peoples and capable of bringing lasting peace to the Holy Land and to the entire region. The condemnation of all forms of violence and the necessity of guaranteeing better conditions of life to all the peoples of the area were reaffirmed. The discussions also touched on Interreligious Dialogue and an overview of the international situation.

The discussions also permitted the examination of the relations between the State of Israel and the Holy See and those of the state authorities with the local catholic communities. In this regard, it was underlined the great particular significance of the presence of these communities in the Holy Land and the contribution which they offer for the common good of society, also through Catholic schools. Finally, the results, thus far, of the bilateral working Commission, which has for many years been tasked with the drafting of an Accord concerning economic matters, were noted while at the same time expressing the hope for the rapid conclusion of its work.
