Questa mattina, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha ricevuto Sua Eccellenza Mikhail Saakashvili, Presidente di Georgia. Successivamente, il medesimo Capo di Stato ha avuto un colloquio con Sua Eminenza il Cardinale Tarcisio Bertone, Segretario di Stato, che era accompagnato da Sua Eccellenza Mons. Dominique Mamberti, Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati.

Gli incontri hanno permesso di affrontare varie questioni bilaterali e di rilievo della vita della Georgia, rinnovando l’impegno delle Parti a favore degli scambi interculturali. Si è riconosciuto, in particolare, il positivo contributo umanitario operato dalla Caritas nei confronti di tutta la popolazione e si è incoraggiata la pacifica convivenza tra i credenti delle diverse religioni in favore del bene comune. Per quanto concerne la situazione nella Regione, si è auspicato che ogni difficoltà venga risolta attraverso il dialogo ed il negoziato tra le istanze interessate.

On Friday 7 May 2010 the Holy Father Benedict XVI received in audience Mikheil Saakashvili, president of Georgia. The president subsequently went on to meet with Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B. who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.

The meetings provided an opportunity to examine various bilateral questions, and other important matters concerning life in Georgia, restating the commitment of the parties in favour of intercultural exchange. In particular, the positive humanitarian contributions made by Caritas to the population were noted, and encouragement given to the peaceful coexistence of believers from various religions, for the sake of the common good. As regards the situation in the region, the hope was expressed that all difficulties will be overcome through dialogue and negotiation among the parties concerned.
