Oggi, nel Palazzo Apostolico in Vaticano, il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha ricevuto Sua Eccellenza il Sig. Saad Rafic Hariri, Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri del Libano. Successivamente, il Primo Ministro ha reso visita all’Em.mo Segretario di Stato, Card. Tarcisio Bertone, il quale era accompagnato dall’Ecc.mo Segretario per i Rapporti con gli Stati, Mons. Dominique Mamberti.

Nel corso dei colloqui, svoltisi in un clima di grande cordialità, ci si è soffermati sulla situazione in Libano e si è auspicato che esso, tramite l’esemplare convivenza delle diverse comunità religiose che lo compongono rimanga un ‘messaggio’ per la Regione mediorientale e per tutto il mondo.

Dopo aver sottolineato la necessità di trovare una soluzione giusta e globale ai conflitti che travagliano detta Regione, si è richiamata l’importanza del dialogo interculturale e di quello interreligioso per promuovere la pace e la giustizia. In tale prospettiva non è mancato un accenno alla prossima Assemblea Speciale del Sinodo dei Vescovi per il Medio Oriente.

Infine, ricordando l’importanza della presenza e dell’opera dei cristiani nel Paese, si è espresso vivo apprezzamento per il contributo che la Chiesa Cattolica offre a beneficio di tutta la società, in particolare attraverso le sue istituzioni educative, sanitarie e assistenziali.

Today in the Vatican Apostolic Palace the Holy Father Benedict XVI received in audience Saad Rafic Hariri, prime minister of Lebanon. The prime minister subsequently went on to meet with Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone S.D.B. who was accompanied by Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, secretary for Relations with States.

During the discussions, which took place in an atmosphere of great cordiality, attention turned to the situation in Lebanon with the hope being expressed that the country, through the exemplary coexistence of the various religious communities of which it is composed, may continue to be a "message" for the region of the Middle East and for the whole world.

Having then highlighted the need to find a just and global solution to the conflicts affecting that region, reference was made to the importance of inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue for the promotion of peace and justice In this context, mention was also made of the forthcoming Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East.

Finally, recalling the importance of the presence and activities of Christians in the country, great appreciation was expressed for the contribution made by the Catholic Church for the benefit of all society, especially through her educational, healthcare and aid institutions.
