In seguito al catastrofico terremoto in Haiti, il Santo Padre ha rivolto un appello all'assistenza spirituale e materiale, dichiarando che "la Chiesa cattolica non mancherà di attivarsi immediatamente tramite le sue istituzioni caritative per venire incontro ai bisogni più immediati della popolazione" (Udienza Generale, 13 gennaio 2010).
Come in passato per altre tragedie di questo tipo, i cattolici sono già presenti con la loro assistenza concreta. Diverse agenzie cattoliche sono all'opera e inviano personale, che è particolarmente richiesto in maniera urgente. Il Pontificio Consiglio Cor Unum, in diretto contatto con Catholic Relief Services (CRS), l'agenzia umanitaria internazionale dei Vescovi degli Stati Uniti, ha chiesto all’organismo di coordinare gli sforzi di assistenza in questa fase. Il personale già sul posto, che conta più di 300 membri attivi da tempo in Haiti, l'esperienza passata, le capacità e le risorse di CRS, permetteranno pronto ed efficace coordinamento degli sforzi della Chiesa che, nelle parole di Papa Benedetto, devono essere generosi e concreti per venire incontro alle pressanti necessità dei nostri fratelli e sorelle in Haiti.

In the hours following the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, the Holy Father made an appeal far the mobilization of spiritual and material assistance, declaring that "the Catholic Church shall not fail to activate herself immediately through her charitable institutions" (General Audience, January 13, 2010).
As with other tragedies, Catholics are already being zealous in providing tangible aid Several Catholic agencies are at work and are sending manpower, which is especially urgent. The Pontifical Council Cor Unum, in direct contact with Catholic Relief Services, the international humanitarian agency of the Bishops of the United States, has asked it to coordinate the relief efforts at this stage. The 300 plus on-the-ground personnel, who have long been active in Haiti, and the past experience, expertise and resources of CRS will enable prompt and effective coordination of the Church's efforts, which, in the words of Pope Benedict, must be generous and concrete to meet the pressing needs of our Haitian brothers and sisters.
