Alle ore 12.30 il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI si trasferisce in auto dal Convento delle Suore Salesiane della Visitazione di Maria alla Mariensäule (colonna di Maria) nella Piazza "Am Hof" a Wien, prima tappa del Suo pellegrinaggio verso Mariazell.
Accolto dal Sindaco di Wien davanti alla Chiesa "Am Hof dei Nove Cori Angelici", il Papa è accompagnato dal Rettore della Chiesa all’interno del tempio, dove sono raccolti un migliaio di fedeli e un coro.
Dalla loggia della facciata della chiesa, introdotto dall’indirizzo di omaggio dell’Arcivescovo di Wien, Em.mo Card. Christoph Schönborn, il Papa dà inizio alla liturgia, alla quale prendono parte tutti i Vescovi dell’Austria.
Dopo il saluto ai fedeli e la preghiera a Maria, il Santo Padre rientra in chiesa per la veglia di preghiera e l’adorazione del Santissimo Sacramento in preparazione alla festa di domani e che sarà portata avanti dai giovani per tutta la durata del viaggio.
Di seguito riportiamo il testo del saluto del Papa con la preghiera alla Mariensäule:

Verehrter, lieber Herr Kardinal,
sehr geehrter Herr Bürgermeister,
liebe Brüder und Schwestern!

Als erste Etappe auf meinem Pilgerweg nach Mariazell habe ich die Mariensäule gewählt, um mit Ihnen einen Augenblick nachzudenken über die Bedeutung der Muttergottes für Österreich einst und jetzt sowie über ihre Bedeutung für einen jeden von uns. Von Herzen begrüße ich Sie alle, die Sie sich hier zum Gebet an der Mariensäule eingefunden haben. Ihnen, lieber Herr Kardinal, danke ich für Ihren herzlichen Willkommensgruß zu Beginn dieser unserer Feier. Ich begrüße den Herrn Bürgermeister der Hauptstadt und alle anwesenden Vertreter des öffentlichen Lebens. Mein besonderer Gruß gilt den Jugendlichen und den Vertretern der anderssprachigen katholischen Gemeinden in der Erzdiözese Wien, die sich im Anschluß an diesen Wortgottesdienst in der Kirche versammeln und bis morgen in Anbetung vor dem Allerheiligsten verharren werden. Ich habe gehört, dass sie schon drei Stunden dastehen. Ich kann sie nur bewundern und „Vergelt’s Gott" sagen. Mit dieser Anbetung verwirklicht Ihr ganz konkret, was wir alle in diesen Tagen tun wollen: mit Maria auf Christus schauen.

Mit dem Glauben an Jesus Christus, den menschgewordenen Sohn Gottes, geht seit frühesten Zeiten eine besondere Verehrung für seine Mutter einher, für die Frau, in deren Schoß er Menschennatur annahm und sogar ihren Herzschlag teilte, die einfühlsam und respektvoll sein Leben begleitete bis zu seinem Tod am Kreuz und deren Mutterliebe er am Ende den Lieblingsjünger und mit ihm die ganze Menschheit anvertraute. In ihrer Mütterlichkeit nimmt Maria auch heute Menschen aus allen Sprachen und Kulturen unter ihren Schutz, um sie in vereinter Vielfalt miteinander zu Christus zu führen. An sie können wir uns wenden in unseren Sorgen und Nöten. Von ihr sollen wir aber auch lernen, einander so liebevoll anzunehmen wie sie uns alle annimmt: einen jeden in seiner Eigenart, von Gott gewollt und geliebt. In der weltweiten Familie Gottes, in der für jeden Menschen ein Platz vorgesehen ist, soll jeder seine persönlichen Gaben zum Wohle aller entfalten.

Die Mariensäule, die Kaiser Ferdinand III. zum Dank für die Befreiung Wiens aus großer Gefahr auf diesem Platz errichten ließ und vor genau 360 Jahren einweihte, soll für uns auch heute ein Zeichen der Hoffnung sein. Wie viele Menschen haben seither vor dieser Säule innegehalten und betend zu Maria aufgeschaut! Wie viele haben in persönlichen Nöten die Kraft ihrer Fürsprache erfahren! Doch unsere christliche Hoffnung umfaßt noch weit mehr als die Erfüllung unserer kleinen und großen Wünsche. Wir schauen auf zu Maria, weil sie uns zeigt, zu welcher Hoffnung wir berufen sind (vgl. Eph 1,18), weil sie das verkörpert, was der Mensch eigentlich ist!

Wir haben es vorhin in der Lesung gehört: Schon vor der Erschaffung der Welt hat Gott uns in Christus erwählt. Jeden von uns kennt und liebt er von Ewigkeit her! Und wozu hat er uns erwählt? Um in Liebe heilig und untadelig vor ihm zu leben! Und das ist keine unerfüllbare Aufgabe: In Christus hat er uns die Verwirklichung schon geschenkt. Wir sind erlöst! Durch unsere Gemeinschaft mit dem auferstandenen Christus hat Gott uns mit allem Segen seines Geistes gesegnet. Öffnen wir unser Herz, nehmen wir das kostbare Erbe an! Dann werden wir mit Maria das Lob seiner herrlichen Gnade anstimmen. Und wenn wir weiter unsere alltäglichen Sorgen vor die makellose Mutter Christi hintragen, wird sie uns helfen, unsere kleinen Hoffnungen immer zu öffnen auf die große, die eigentliche Hoffnung hin, die unserem Leben Sinn gibt und uns mit tiefer, unzerstörbarer Freude erfüllen kann.

In diesem Sinne möchte ich nun mit Ihnen aufschauen zur Immaculata, ihrer Fürsprache die Bitten anvertrauen, die Sie vorhin vorgetragen haben, und sie um ihren mütterlichen Schutz für dieses Land und seine Bewohner bitten:

Heilige Maria, makellose Mutter unseres Herrn Jesus Christus, in dir hat Gott uns das Urbild der Kirche und des rechten Menschseins geschenkt. Dir vertraue ich das Land Österreich und seine Bewohner an: Hilf uns allen, deinem Beispiel zu folgen und unser Leben ganz auf Gott auszurichten! Laß uns, indem wir auf Christus schauen, ihm immer ähnlicher, wirklich Kinder Gottes werden! Dann können auch wir, erfüllt mit allem Segen seines Geistes, immer besser seinem Willen entsprechen und so zu Werkzeugen des Friedens werden für Österreich, für Europa und für die Welt. Amen.

onorevole Signor Sindaco,
cari fratelli e sorelle!

Come prima tappa del mio pellegrinaggio verso Mariazell ho scelto la Mariensäule, per riflettere un momento con voi sul significato della Madre di Dio per l’Austria del passato e del presente, come anche sul suo significato per ciascuno di noi. Saluto di cuore tutti voi convenuti qui per la preghiera ai piedi della Mariensäule. Ringrazio Lei, caro Signor Cardinale, per le calorose parole di benvenuto all’inizio di questa nostra celebrazione. Saluto il Signor Sindaco della Capitale e tutte le Autorità presenti. Un particolare saluto rivolgo ai giovani e ai rappresentanti delle comunità di lingue straniere nell’Arcidiocesi di Vienna, che dopo questa liturgia della Parola si raccoglieranno nella chiesa, dove fino a domani rimarranno in adorazione davanti al Santissimo. Ho sentito che stanno qui ormai da tre ore. Posso solo ammirarli e dire: "Vergelt’s Gott!" Con questa adorazione realizzate in modo molto concreto ciò che in questi giorni vogliamo fare tutti noi: con Maria guardare a Cristo.

Con la fede in Gesù Cristo, il Figlio di Dio incarnato, si collega sin dai primi tempi una venerazione particolare per sua Madre, per quella Donna, nel cui grembo Egli assunse la natura umana partecipando perfino al battito del suo cuore, la Donna che accompagnò con delicatezza e rispetto la sua vita fino alla sua morte in croce, e al cui amore materno Egli alla fine affidò il discepolo prediletto e con lui tutta l’umanità. Nel suo sentimento materno Maria accoglie anche oggi sotto la sua protezione persone di tutte le lingue e culture, per condurle insieme, in una multiforme unità, verso Cristo. A Lei possiamo rivolgerci nelle nostre preoccupazioni e necessità. Da Lei, però, dobbiamo anche imparare ad accoglierci a vicenda con lo stesso amore con cui Ella accoglie tutti noi: ciascuno nella sua singolarità, voluto come tale e amato da Dio. Nella famiglia universale di Dio, nella quale per ogni persona è previsto un posto, ciascuno deve sviluppare i propri doni per il bene di tutti.

La Mariensäule, eretta dall’imperatore Ferdinando III come ringraziamento per la liberazione di Vienna da un grande pericolo e da lui inaugurata proprio 360 anni fa, deve essere anche per noi oggi un segno di speranza. Quante persone, da allora, si sono fermate presso questa colonna e, pregando, hanno levato gli occhi verso Maria! Quanti hanno sperimentato nelle difficoltà personali la forza della sua intercessione! Ma la nostra speranza cristiana si estende ben oltre la realizzazione dei nostri desideri piccoli e grandi. Noi leviamo gli occhi verso Maria, che ci mostra a quale speranza siamo stati chiamati (cfr Ef 1, 18); Lei, infatti, personifica ciò che l’uomo è veramente!

L’abbiamo appena sentito nella Lettura biblica: già prima della creazione del mondo, Dio ci ha scelti in Cristo. Egli conosce ed ama ciascuno di noi fin dall’eternità! E a quale scopo ci ha scelti? Per essere santi e immacolati al suo cospetto nella carità! E ciò non è un compito inattuabile: in Cristo Egli ce ne ha già donato la realizzazione. Noi siamo redenti! In virtù della nostra comunione col Cristo risorto, Dio ci ha benedetti con ogni benedizione spirituale. Apriamo il nostro cuore, accogliamo l’eredità preziosa! Allora potremo intonare, insieme a Maria, la lode della sua grazia. E se continueremo a portare le nostre preoccupazioni quotidiane davanti alla Madre immacolata di Cristo, Lei ci aiuterà ad aprire le nostre piccole speranze sempre verso la grande, vera speranza che dà senso alla nostra vita e può colmarci di una gioia profonda ed indistruttibile.

In questo senso vorrei ora, insieme a voi, levare gli occhi verso l’Immacolata, affidare a Lei le preghiere che poc’anzi avete pronunciate e chiedere la sua protezione materna per questo Paese e per i suoi abitanti:

Santa Maria, Madre Immacolata del nostro Signore Gesù Cristo, in te Dio ci ha donato il prototipo della Chiesa e del retto modo di attuare la nostra umanità. A te affido il Paese d’Austria e i suoi abitanti: aiuta tutti noi a seguire il tuo esempio e ad orientare la nostra vita totalmente verso Dio! Fa che, guardando a Cristo, diventiamo sempre più simili a Lui: veri figli di Dio! Allora anche noi, pieni di ogni benedizione spirituale, potremo corrispondere sempre meglio alla sua volontà e diventare così strumenti di pace per l’Austria, per l’Europa e per il mondo. Amen.

As the first stop of my pilgrimage to Mariazell I have chosen the Mariensäule, to reflect briefly with all of you on the significance of the Mother of God for Austria past and present, and her significance for each one of us. I offer a cordial greeting to all those gathered here to pray beneath the Mariensäule. I thank you, dear Eminence, for the warm words of welcome at the beginning of our celebration. I greet the Mayor of the capital and the other Authorities present. I particularly greet the young people and the representatives of the foreign-language Catholic communities in the Archdiocese of Vienna, who will gather after this Liturgy of the Word in the church and will remain until tomorrow in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. I have heard that you have been here for three hours already. I can only express my admiration and say Vergelt’s Gott! With this adoration you will very concretely accomplish what all of us wish to do in these days: with Mary, to look to Christ.

From earliest times, faith in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God, has been linked to a particular veneration for his Mother, for the Woman in whose womb he took on our human nature, sharing even in the beating of her heart. Mary is the Woman who accompanied Jesus with sensitivity and deference throughout his life, even to his death on the Cross. At the end, he commended to her maternal love the beloved disciple and, with him, all humanity. In her maternal love, Mary continues to take under her protection people of all languages and cultures, and to lead them together, within a multiform unity, to Christ. In our problems and needs we can turn to Mary. Yet we must also learn from her to accept one another lovingly in the same way that she has accepted all of us: each as an individual, willed as such and loved by God. In God’s universal family, in which there there is a place for everyone, each person must develop his gifts for the good of all.

The Mariensäule, built by the Emperor Ferdinand III in thanksgiving for the liberation of Vienna from great danger and inaugurated by him exactly 360 years ago, must also be a sign of hope for us today. How many persons, over the years, have stood before this column and lifted their gaze to Mary in prayer! How many have experienced in times of trouble the power of her intercession! Our Christian hope includes much more than the mere fulfilment of our wishes and desires, great or small. We turn our gaze to Mary, because she points out to us the great hope to which we have been called (cf. Eph 1:18), because she personifies our true humanity!

This is what we have just heard in the biblical reading: even before the creation of the world, God chose us in Christ. From eternity he has known and loved each one of us! And why did he choose us? To be holy and immaculate before him in love! This is no impossible task: in Christ he has already brought it to fulfilment. We have been redeemed! By virtue of our communion with the Risen Christ, God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. Let us open our hearts; let us accept this precious legacy! Then we will be able to sing, together with Mary, the praises of his glorious grace. And if we continue to bring our everyday concerns to the immaculate Mother of Christ, she will help us to open our little hopes ever more fully towards that great and true hope which gives meaning to our lives and is able to fill us with a deep and imperishable joy.

With these sentiments I would now like to join you in looking to Mary Immaculate, entrusting to her intercession the prayers which you have just now presented, and imploring her maternal protection upon this country and its people:

Holy Mary, Immaculate Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, in you God has given us the model of the Church and of genuine humanity. To you I entrust the country of Austria and its people. Help all of us to follow your example and to direct our lives completely to God! Grant that, by looking to Christ, we may become ever more like him: true children of God! Then we too, filled with every spiritual blessing, will be able to conform ourselves more fully to his will and to become instruments of his peace for Austria, Europe and the world. Amen.

Accolto dal Gran Rabbino di Wien, Paul Chaim Eisenberg e dal Presidente della Comunità ebraica, Ariel Muzikant, il Papa si raccoglie in preghiera.
