DALY Card. Cahal Brendan

Cardinal Cahal Brendan Daly, Archbishop emeritus of Armagh (Ireland), was born on 1 October 1917 in Loughguile, diocese of Down and Connor. He was ordained a priest on 22 June 1941.

He earned advanced degrees in philosophy and theology. Some thirty years of his priestly ministry have been dedicated to teaching and he was involved in the Second Vatican Council.

His was ordained bishop of Ardagh on 26 May 1967, and received episcopal ordination on 16 July 1967.

On 24 August 1982 he was transferred to the diocese of Down and Connor. 

On 6 November 1990 he was named Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. 

Throughout his entire ministry he sought to ease the religious and political violence in Northern Ireland by explaining the value of mutual understanding and recognition of the rights of all. He is also the author of many written works.

Created and proclaimed Cardinal by John Paul II in the consistory of 28 June 1991, of the Title of S. Patrizio (St. Patrick).

Cardinal Cahal Brendan Daly died on 31 December 2009.
