BRISLIN Card. Stephen 


BRISLIN

Cardinal Stephen Brislin, Metropolitan Archbishop of Johannesburg, South Africa, was born in Welkom, Diocese of Kroonstad, on 24 September 1956.

He completed his first studies at the Convent of Saint Agnes and CBC, Welkom.

He entered the seminary, studying philosophy at Saint John Vianney, Pretoria, and theology at the Missionary Institute of London.

He was ordained a priest on 19 November 1983.

On 17 October 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Bishop of Kroonstad in South Africa, and he was ordained on 28 January 2007.

On 18 December 2009, he was elected Archbishop of Cape Town, taking canonical possession of the see on 7 February 2010, on the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Flight into Egypt, the patronal feast of the Archdiocese of Cape Town, and, on 28 October 2024, he was transferred to Johanesburg.

From 2013 to 2019 he served as president of the South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

He was created and proclaimed cardinal by Pope Francis in the Consistory of 30 September 2023, and was assigned the titular church Santa Maria Domenica Mazzarello.
