Appointment of bishop of Campanha, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Walter Jorge Pinto as bishop of the diocese of Campanha, transferring him from the see of União da Vitória.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Walter Jorge Pinto was born on 12 February 1963 in Ubá, diocese of Leopoldina, State of Minas Gerais. He studied philosophy and theology at the São José Major Seminary of Mariana-MG.

He was ordained a priest on 1 June 2002 for the metropolitan archdiocese of Mariana.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Nossa Senhora do Rosário de Fátima in Viçosa-MG, parish administrator of São Sebastião in Pedra do Anta-MG, auditor judge and defender of the bond of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Mariana, archdiocesan assessor of vocational pastoral care and family pastoral care, parish priest of São João Batista in Viçosa-MG and the Basilica of São José Operário in Barbacena-MG, vicar forane, episcopal vicar, representative of presbyters, and member of the College of Consultors and the Presbyteral College.

On 9 January 2019 he was appointed bishop of União da Vitória, receiving episcopal ordination the following 30 March.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Benedito Araújo as bishop of the diocese of Campo Maior, Brazil, transferring him from the diocese of Guajará-Mirim.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Benedito Araújo was born on 21 November 1963 in Paço do Lumiar, in the archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão. After attending the Faculty of Philosophy and Theology in São Luís, at the Instituto de Ensino Superior do Maranhão (IESMA), he was awarded a licentiate in ecumenism at the Facultas Theologiae – Institute of Ecumenical Studies of Venice of the Pontifical University “Antonianum” of Rome.

He was ordained a priest on 17 November 1991.

He has held the following offices: rector of the minor seminary of the archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão, rector of the interdiocesan seminary, vocational promoter of the archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão and the Nordeste 5 Region of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, parish priest of Sagrada Família, parish administrator of Divino Espírito Santo, archdiocesan pastoral coordinator, parish priest of Nossa Senhora de Nazaré, professor of ecumenism at the Instituto de Ensino Superior do Maranhão (IESMA), member of the College of Consultors, the Presbyteral Council and the Team for Ongoing Formation of the archdiocese of São Luís do Maranhão.

On 23 March 2011 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the diocese of Guajará-Mirim, receiving episcopal ordination the following 4 June; he assumed the pastoral care of the diocese on 8 December 2011.
