Appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Wien, Austria
The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Josef Grünwidl, until now apostolic administrator of the same archdiocese, as metropolitan archbishop of Wien, Austria.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. Josef Grünwidl was born on 31 January 1963 in Hollabrunn, metropolitan archdiocese of Wien. He attended the Seminary of Wien and studied philosophy and theology at Wien University.
He was ordained a priest on 29 June 1988 for the same archdiocese.
He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Saint John of Nepomuk, Wien (1988,1991), parish vicar of the Wiener Neustadt-Dom (1991-1993), youth spiritual assistant (1993-1995), personal secretary to the metropolitan archbishop of Wien (1995-1998), parish priest and dean in Kirchberg am Wechsel (1998-2014), parish priest and dean in Perchtoldsdorf (2014-2023), executive president of the Presbyteral Council of the metropolitan archdiocese of Wien (2023-2025), honorary canon of Saint Stephen’s Cathedral in Wien (2024-2025), and episcopal vicar of Unter dem Wienerwald (2023-2025).
In January 2025 he was appointed apostolic administrator of the metropolitan archdiocese of Wien.
