The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Omaha, United States of America, presented by Archbishop George J. Lucas.
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Michael G. McGovern of the the diocese of Belleville, United States of America, as metropolitan archbishop of Omaha, United States of America.
Curriculum vitae
Archbishop-elect Michael G. McGovern was born on 1 July 1964 in Chicago, in the archdiocese of the same name. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy at Loyola University, Chicago, and studied at DePaul University College of Law. He entered the seminary, where he carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein.
He was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Chicago on 21 May 1994.
He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Queen of the Universe in Chicago (1995-1998), Saint Mary in Lake Forest (1998-1999) and of Saint Juliana in Chicago (2003-2004), assistant chancellor (1998-1999) and vice chancellor (1999-2000), delegate of the archbishop for extra-diocesan and foreign priests (2000-2002), parish priest of Saint Mary in Lake Forest (2004-2016) and Saint Raphael the Archangel in Old Mill Creek (2016-2020).
He was appointed bishop of Belleville on 3 April 2020, and received episcopal consecration the following 22 July.
