Appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Szczecin-Kamién, Poland

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Wiesław Śmigiel as metropolitan archbishop of Szczecin-Kamién, transferring him from the See of Torún.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop-elect Wiesław Śmigiel was born on 3 January 1969 in Święć nad Wisłą (on the Vistola). He entered the major seminary of Pelplin, and was ordained a priest on 29 May 1994 for the same diocese.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar of the Most Holy Trinity, Kościerzyna (1994-1996), secretary and chaplain of the bishop of Pelplin (1996-1998), student at the John Paul II Catholic University, Lublin (1998-2003), chaplain of the Student House (2000-2002), professor of pastoral theology in the major seminary of Pelplin (2001-2002), adjunct (2006-2011) and titular professor (2011-2012) of the chair of pastoral theology at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.

He was elected to the titular see of Beatia and appointed auxiliary of Pelplin on 24 March 2012, and received episcopal ordination the following 21 April.

On 11 November 2017 he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Torún.

In 2021 he served as apostolic administrator sede vacante of the diocese of Bydgoszcz and in 2022 of the diocese of Płock.

 

Appointment of bishop of Plymouth, England

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Philip Moger, until now titular of Glastonia and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Southwark, as bishop of Plymouth, England.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Philip Moger was born on 25 April 1995 in Halifax, in the county of West Yorkshire, diocese of Leeds, England. After attending Saint Cuthbert’s College in Ushaw, he was ordained a priest on 26 June 1982 for the same diocese.

He has held the following offices: parish vicar of Saint Urban Catholic Church, Leeds (1982-1985), vicar administrator at the Middlyton Lodge Youth Centre, Ilkley (1985-1992), vicar administrator of Saint Anne’s Cathedral, Leeds (1992-2001), director of vocations (1995-2004), special secretary to the bishop (2001-2004), parish priest of the First Martyrs of Rome, Bradford (2004-2008), dean of Saint Anne’s Cathedral, Leeds (2008-2019), parish priest of the Mother of Unfailing Help parish, Leeds (2010-2019), parish priest of the Saint John Mary Vianney parish (2019-2020), rector of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, Walsingham (2020-2022).

He was appointed titular bishop of Glastonia and auxiliary of Southwark on 28 November 2022, and received episcopal consecration the following 21 February.
