Chirograph of the Holy Father Francis on the Statute and Regulations of the Chapter of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, 29.06.2024

The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, built over the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles, is officiated by a Chapter of Canons who safeguard its decor and promote its spiritual, pastoral, charitable and cultural life.

This service is addressed with particular attention to the many pilgrims who, inspired by sincere devotion, flock to confirm their faith at the place of the Apostle's Confession, but also to the many visitors, often belonging to different cultures and religions, who are interested in the contemplation of the artistic and architectural beauties kept in the Vatican Temple and the Christian message they convey.

After a process of renewal of some aspects of Chapter life that I initiative with the Transitory Norms published on 28 August 2021, accompanied by the Provisional Criteria, and wishing to bring to completion the work begun, I requested that a new Statute be drafted and a new Regulation of the Chapter of the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, inspired by the principles and criteria of the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium, be prepared, and which, with the present Chirograph, I approve.

All that I have established herein shall have full and stable force, notwithstanding any provision to the contrary, even worthy of special mention; shall enter into force upon publication in L'Osservatore Romano and, thereafter, shall be included in the Acta Apostolicae Sedis.

Given in Rome, at Saint Peter's, on June 29, 2024, Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles, twelfth of my Pontificate.

FRANCIS
