Appointment of bishop of Hangzhou, China

In the context of the dialogue regarding the application of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People’s Republic of China, on 12 June 2024, the Holy Father appointed Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang as bishop of Hangzhou, Chinese Province of Zhejiang, transferring him from the see of Zhoucun, Chinese Province of Shandong.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang was born on 11 April 1970 in Boxing, Shandong. He carried out his studies in philosophy and theology at the Holy Spirit Seminary of Shandong, and at the seminary of Sheshan in Shanghai. On 5 June 1995 he received priestly ordination. After carrying out the ministry of parish priest, he was sent to further his formation at the National Seminary of Beijing. He subsequently held the office of lecturer at the Holy Spirit Seminary of Shandong. He was appointed coadjutor bishop of Zhoucun, and consecrated on 15 November 2010. On 8 February 2013 he succeeded Bishop Ma Xuesheng. On 12 June 2024, Pope Francis appointed him bishop of Hangzhou.

 

Appointment of bishop of Rio Grande, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Jorge Pierozan as bishop of the diocese of Rio Grande, Brazil, transferring him from the titular see of Arena and the office of auxiliary of São Paulo.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Jorge Pierozan was born on 10 August 1964 in Vanini, in the diocese of Caxias do Sul, State of Rio Grande do Sul. He carried out his studies in philosophy at the Universidade de Caxias do Sul-RS and in theology at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology Nossa Senhora da Assunção in São Paulo-SP.

He received priestly ordination on 24 May 1997, and was incardinated in the archdiocese of São Paulo.

He has held the following offices: parish priest of Santíssima Trindade and Sagrado Coração de Jesus in the Lapa Episcopal Region, member of the Regional Commission of Priests, member of the Presbyteral Council, pastoral coordinator of the Lapa Episcopal Region, ecclesiastical assistant for the pastoral care of nomads, member of the Regional Commission for Economic Affairs, vice-president for the pastoral care of the nomads of Brazil, episcopal vicar, and adjunct vicar general.

On 24 July 2019 he was appointed titular bishop of Arena and auxiliary of São Paulo, receiving episcopal ordination the following 28 September.
