Appointment of bishop of the eparchy of New Westminster of the Ukrainians, Canada

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Michael Kwiatkowski, until now parish priest of Blessed Eucharist and chancellor of the archeparchy of Winnipeg of the Ukrainians, Canada, as bishop of the eparchy of New Westminster of the Ukrainians, Canada.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Michael Kwiatkowski was born on 21 November 1961 in Hamiota-Manitoba, Canada. In the years 1975 to 1979 he studied in the College of Saint Volodymyr Minor Seminary. From 1980 to 1986 he was a resident of the Pontifical Saint Josephat College in Rome, attending the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas for his studies in philosophy (bachelor’s degree, 1980-1982) and theology (bachelor’s degree, 1982-1985). In 1989 he completed postgraduate studies in bioethics in Lincoln in Nebraska. From 1994 to 2000 he attended the Pontifical Oriental Institute, where he was awarded first a licentiate and then a doctorate in Oriental Canon Law.

On 14 September 1985 he was ordained a deacon, and on 28 July 1986 he was ordained a priest by the Metropolitan Archbishop Maksym Hermaniuk. From 1996 to 2005 he carried out pastoral activities in Ukraine, holding the following roles: chancellor of the Patriarchal Curia, judge and head of the Tribunal of the Major Archbishop; vice-rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University; professor of canon law and dean of the Faculty of Pastoral Theology at the UCU.

At the end of 2005 he returned to Canada, where he held the role of spiritual father of the Seminary of the Holy Spirit in Ottawa from 2006 to 2010. He is currently parish priest of the Blessed Eucharist in Winnipeg and, since 2014, holds the role of chancellor of the archeparchy of Winnipeg, where he is incardinated.
