Resignation and appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Brazil

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the metropolitan archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, Brazil, presented by Archbishop Antônio Fernando Saburido, O.S.B.

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Paulo Jackson Nóbrega de Sousa as archbishop of Olinda and Recife, Brazil, transferring him from the diocese of Garanhuns.

Curriculum vitae

Archbishop-elect Paulo Jackson Nóbrega de Sousa was born on 17 April 1969 in São José de Espinharas, diocese of Patos, in the State of Paraíba. He studied philosophy at the Instituto de Teologia do Recife (ITER) in Recife-PE, and theology at the archdiocesan seminary of Paraíba in João Pessoa-PB. He was then awarded a licentiate in biblical sciences from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and a doctorate in biblical theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

He received priestly ordination on 17 December 1993, for the diocese of Patos.

He has held the following offices: parish administrator São Sebastião in Catingueira-PB, São Pedro in Patos-PB, Nossa Senhora das Dores in Mãe d’Água-PB and Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Patos-PB; parish vicar of Nossa Senhora da Guia; parish priest of Santo Antônio in Patos-PB and Nossa Senhora da Conceição in São Mamede-PB; rector of the diocesan seminary; diocesan pastoral coordinator; professor in the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais (PUC-Minas) and the Faculdade Jesuíta de Filosofia e Teologia (FAJE); parish vicar of São Geraldo and parish administrator of Senhor Bom Jesus do Horto; and national secretary of the Organização dos Seminários e Institutos Filosófico-Teológicos do Brasil (OSIB).

On 20 May 2015 he was appointed bishop of Garanhuns, receiving episcopal ordination the following 18 July.

Within the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, he is a member of the Episcopal Pastoral Commission for Biblical-Catechetic Animation, president of the Nordest 2 Region and second vice-president of the same Bishops’ Conference.

 

Appointment of bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, England

The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Stephen Wright, until now titular of Ramsbiria and auxiliary of the diocese of Birmingham, as bishop of the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, England.

Curriculum vitae

Bishop Stephen James Lawrence Wright was born on 9 October 1970 in Stafford, in the archdiocese of Birmingham.  After graduating in law and qualifying as a solicitor, he completed his ecclesiastical studies at Saint Mary’s College Seminary, Oscott, in Birmingham and the Venerable English College in Rome, obtaining a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University.

He was ordained a priest on 9 September 2000 for the archdiocese of Birmingham.

He has held the following positions: parish vicar of Corpus Christi parish in Stechford, Birmingham (2000-2003); parish priest of Saint Joseph's in Banbury (2003-2007); parish priest of Saint Mary and Modwen in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire (2007-2019); episcopal vicar for religious (2012-2019); since 2019, vicar general.

On 18 March 2020, he was appointed titular bishop of Ramsbiria and auxiliary of Birmingham, receiving episcopal consecration on the following 9 October.

 

Appointment of member of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts

The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, as member of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts.

 

Appointment of rapporteur of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Melchor José Sánchez de Toca y Alameda, until now under-secretary of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, as rapporteur of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
