Appointment of member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences

The Holy Father has appointed the distinguished Professor Jules A. Hoffman, professor of Biologie integrative at the Institut d’Études Avancées de l’Université de Strasbourg, France, as member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Curriculum vitae

The distinguished Professor Jules A. Hoffman was born on 2 August 1941 in Echternach, Luxembourg. He was awarded a doctorate in biology from the Université de Strasbourg. He is professor emeritus at the Université de Strasbourg and research director emeritus at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique in France. He has received numerous honours and awards, including the Noble Prize for Medicine in 2011.

The Holy Father has appointed the distinguished Professor Masashi Mizokami, director of the Genome Medical Sciences Project at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine in Japan, as member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Curriculum vitae

The distinguished Professor Masashi Mizokami was born on 25 February 1948 in Saga, Japan. He was awarded a doctorate in medicine from the Nagoya City University Medical School. He has served as professor of clinical genetics at the same University, and general director of the Research Center for Hepatitis and Immunology of the National Center for Global Health and Medicine, where he is currently director of the Genome Medical Sciences Project. He has received numerous scientific awards, including the Research Award of the Viral Hepatitis Research Foundation of Japan and the Hakoneyama Award of the International Cooperation Medical Research Promotion Foundation.

The Holy Father has appointed the distinguished Professor Tebello Nyokong, professor of chemistry and director of the Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation at Rhodes University, South Africa, as member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

Curriculum vitae

The distinguished Professor Tebello Nyokong was born on 20 October 1951 in Maseru, Lesotho. She studied chemistry and biology at the National University of Lesotho. After obtaining a master’s degree in chemistry from McMaster University, Canada, in 1981, she was awarded a doctorate in the same discipline at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1987. She is professor of chemistry and director of the Institute for Nanotechnology Innovation at Rhodes University, South Africa. She has received numerous honours and awards, including the Order of Mapungubwe, and the Gold Medal of the South African Chemical Institute.
