Election of archbishop of Mosul of the Syrians, Iraq

The Holy Father has granted his assent to the election by the Synod of Bishops of the Patriarchal Church of Antioch of the Syrians of the Reverend Qusay Mubarak Abdullah (Younan) Hano as archbishop of Mosul of the Syrians, Iraq.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Younan Hano was born in Qaraqosh, Iraq, on 10 September 1982. After studying nursing, he began his seminary training, first in Baghdad and then in Lebanon, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in philosophy and theology at Saint-Esprit University.

Following his priestly ordination on 29 June 2011, for the archeparchy of Mosul of the Syrians, he served as vicar of the Mar Jacob parish in Qaraqosh, special secretary to the archbishop, then after the invasion of the Nineveh Plain he took care of the displaced Syrians at the Mar Shmoni Church in Erbil, and for two years was protosyncellus of the archeparchy. His other assignments include teaching Holy Scripture, editing a radio programme, representing the Iraqi Church in the Middle East Council of Churches, and working with the Inter-Ritual Court in Erbil.

Since 2019 he has been in Rome to pursue doctoral studies in biblical theology.

In addition to Syriac and Arabic, he also knows English and Italian.

 

Election of archbishop of Homs of the Syrians, Syria

The Holy Father has granted his assent to the election by the Synod of Bishops of the Patriarchal Church of Antioch of the Syrians of the Reverend Yagop (Jacques) Mourad as archbishop of Homs of the Syrians, Syria.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Jacques Mourad was born in Aleppo, Syria, on 28 June 1968. After entering the seminary in Charfet, Lebanon, he continued his education, obtaining a bachelor's degree in philosophy and theology, and then a licentiate in liturgy from Saint-Esprit University in Kaslik. He entered the Monastic Community of Deir Mar Musa Al-Abashi, of which he is a co-founder, and gave his vows there on 20 July 1993.

On 28 August, he was ordained a priest and incardinated in the archeparchy of Homs of the Syrians. From 2000 to 2015, he was in charge of the Mar Elian Convent and the parish of Qaryatayn. After being kidnapped by jihadists between May and October 2015, he stayed in the branch monasteries of Cori, Italy, and Sulaymanyah, Iraq. Since returning to Syria in 2020, he has served as deputy superior of the Community and bursar, looking after the faithful of Qaryatayn; he is also a member of the College of Consultors of the archeparchy of Homs.

In addition to Arabic, he knows Syriac, French, English and Italian.
