Election of archbishop of Tyr of the Greek-Melkites, Lebanon

The Holy Father has terminated the office of Bishop Elie Béchara Haddad, B.S., as apostolic administrator sede vacante of the archeparchy of Tyr of the Greek-Melkites, Lebanon.

The Holy Father has given his assent to the election by the Synod of Bishops of the Patriarchal Church of Antioch of the Greek-Melkites of the Reverend Georges Iskandar, B.S., until now Superior of the Convent of Saint Elijah of Zahle, as archbishop of Tyr of the Greek-Melkites.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Georges Iskandar was born on 4 February 1968 in Ain El Mir, Jezzine, Lebanon. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a diploma in computer management from the State University, he entered the Salvatorian Basilian Order. He attended the institutional courses in philosophy and theology at the Saint Esprit University of Kaslik, and was awarded a licentiate in canon law from Saint Paul University in Ottawa.

He was ordained a priest on 11 July 1998, after the period of study in Canada, where he collaborated in the Saints Peter and Paul parish in Ottawa (1999 to 2003). He returned to Lebanon, where he was appointed rector of the minor seminary of the Order and of the school of Joun, and subsequently head of the Foyer de l’Amitié in Zahlé.

He has also served as vicar general of the Order and, since 2007, president of the Unified Greek-Melkite Tribunal.

Besides Arabic, he speaks English and French.

 

Election of bishop of the eparchy of Kamichlié of the Armenians, Syria

The Holy Father has terminated the office of Bishop Boutros Marayati as apostolic administrator sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the eparchy of Kamichlié of the Armenians, Syria.

The Holy Father has given his assent to the election by the Synod of the Patriarchal Church of Cilicia of the Armenians to the election of the Reverend Antranig Ayvazian, of the clergy of the same circumscription, until now parish priest of Saint-Joseph of Kamichlié and chaplain of the Sainte-Famille Church of Hassaké, as bishop of the eparchy of Kamichlié of the Armenians.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Antranig Ayvazian was born on 29 August 1947 in Hassaké, Syria, and entered the seminary of Bzommar, in Lebanon, continuing his studies at the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

He was ordained a priest on 18 March 1972 for the eparchy of Kamichlié, and exercised his ministry in the eparchy and the parishes of Deir-el-Zor. In 1984 he was appointed archpriest. He founded various bodies for the pastoral assistance of the young and the disabled. He has served as director of the parish schools and holds annual courses as visiting professor at Yerevan State University, Armenia. He founded the Saint-Georges Shrine in Hayko-Derbassie, and is the director of Radio Maria Armenia.

Besides Arabic and Armenian, he speaks French and Italian.
