Appointment of auxiliary bishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Detroit, U.S.A.
The Holy Father has appointed Archbishop Paul Fitzpatrick Russell, titular of Novi, former apostolic nuncio in Turkey, Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan, as auxiliary bishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Detroit, United States of America, conserving his personal title of archbishop of Novi.
Curriculum vitae
Archbishop Paul Fitzpatrick Russell was born on 2 May 1959 in Greenfield, Massachusetts, diocese of Springfield. He carried out his ecclesiastical studies at the Saint John Seminary in Boston. He was awarded a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University.
He was ordained a priest on 20 June 1987 for the metropolitan archdiocese of Boston.
He entered the Holy See diplomatic service on 1 July 1997, and served in the Section of General Affairs of the Secretariat of State and in the Pontifical Representations in Ethiopia, Turkey, Switzerland, Nigeria and China. On 19 March 2016 he was appointed titular archbishop of Novi and apostolic nuncio in Turkey and Turkmenistan, and received episcopal consecration the following 3 June. On 7 April 2018 he was appointed as apostolic nuncio also in Azerbaijan.
