Appointment of bishop of the diocese of Oita, Japan

The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Sulpizio Shinzo Moriyama, of the clergy of Fukuoka, until now secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan, as bishop of the diocese of Oita, Japan.

Curriculum vitae

Msgr. Sulpizio Shinzo Moriyama was born on 17 January 1959 in Fukuoka. He was awarded a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Keio University of Tokyo in 1984, and in theology from the San Sulpizio Seminary of Fukuoka in 1988.

He was ordained a priest on 21 March 1988, and incardinated in the diocese of Fukuoka, where he has held the following offices: parish vicar of Daimyo Cho (1988-1991) and of Kokura (1991-1993), director of the minor seminary of Fukuoka (1993-1995), parish priest of Oomuta (1995-2001), parish priest of Tobata (2001-2007), parish priest of Nishijin (2007-2013), parish priest of Kurume (2014-2017), president of the diocesan Committee for Evangelization (2015-2017), and head of formation of candidates in the interdiocesan seminary (2017-2020). From 2020 to the present he has served as under-secretary and subsequently secretary general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan.
