Appointment of bishop of Trois-Rivières, Canada
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Martin Laliberté, P.M.E., until now titular of Sertei and auxiliary of Québec, as bishop of Trois-Rivières, Canada.
Curriculum vitae
Bishop Martin Laliberté, P.M.E., was born on 13 December 1964 in Charlesbourg in the archdiocese of Québec. He obtained a diploma in pedagogy at Laval University in Québec in 1987. After a year of spiritual formation at the Centre de Spiritualité Manrèse of Québec, he attended the Saint Paul University of Ottawa, where he was awarded a master’s degree in mission science.
He was ordained a priest on 28 October 1995, and incardinated in the archdiocese of Québec. He is a member of the Société des Missions-Étrangères.
He has held the following offices: lay missionary in Haiti (1987-1989) and, after ordination, in Brazil, in the region of Manaus (1996-2004). From 1998 to 2000, he was chair of the Presbyteral Council of the Prelature of Coari, Brazil. Upon returning to Brazil, he was director of the centre of formation for lay missionary candidates.
He also served from 2008 to 2013 as assistant of the Société des Missions-Étrangères and vicar general, and superior general of the Société des Missions-Étrangères (2013-2019).
On 25 November 2019 he was elected as titular bishop of Sertei and auxiliary of Québec.
