Appointment of auxiliary bishops of the metropolitan archdiocese of New York, U.S.A.

The Holy Father has appointed the following as auxiliary bishops of the metropolitan archdiocese of New York, United States of America: the Reverend John S. Bonnici, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, until now parish priest of the Saint Augustine parish and the Saints John and Paul parish in Larchmont, assigning him the titular see of Arindela; and the Reverend Joseph A. Espaillat, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, until now parish priest of the Saint Anthony of Padua parish in the Bronx, assigning him the titular see of Tagarbala.

 

Curriculum vitae of Msgr. John S. Bonnici

Msgr. John. S. Bonnici was born on 17 February 1965 in New York, in the state of New York, in the metropolitan archdiocese of the same name. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology and philosophy from Saint John's University in New York (1987). He pursued his ecclesiastical studies at the Pontifical North American College, obtaining a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and the Family (1992). Subsequently, he obtained his doctorate from the same institute in Washington, U.S.A. (1995).

He was ordained a priest on 22 June 1991 for the metropolitan archdiocese of New York.

Since ordination he has held the following positions: parish vicar of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Elmsford (1992-1994); adjunct professor of theology at Saint Joseph's Seminary & College in Dunwoodie (1995); deputy director (1995-1996) and director (1996-1999) of the Family Life/Respect Life Office; pastor of Saint Philip Neri parish in the Bronx (2002-2008); pastor of Saint Columba parish in Chester (2008-2021); and administrator of the Saint Mary parish in Washingtonville (2020-2021). Since 2021 he has been pastor of the Saint Augustine parish and the Saints John and Paul parish in Larchmont.

 

Curriculum vitae of Msgr. Joseph A. Espaillat

Msgr. Joseph A. Espaillat was born on 27 December 1976 in New York City, in the metropolitan archdiocese of the same name. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Fordham University in the Bronx (1998). He completed a preparatory year in Northampton, New York, and then carried out his ecclesiastical studies at Saint Joseph's Seminary & College in Dunwoodie, obtaining a master's degree in ecclesiastical history (2003).

He was ordained a priest on 17 May 2003 for the metropolitan archdiocese of New York.

Since his ordination he has held the following positions: parish vicar of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs parish in Manhattan (2003-2007); administrator and parish priest of the Saint Peter parish in Yonkers (2007-2012); and archdiocesan director of youth ministry (2012-2015). From 2015 until now he has served as pastor of the Saint Anthony of Padua parish in the Bronx. He is also archdiocesan director of Hispanic Charismatic Renewal.
