Election of archbishop of Cyprus of the Maronites, Cyprus
The Holy Father has granted his assent to the election by the Synod of Bishops of the Patriarchal Church of Antioch of the Maronites, as archbishop of Cyprus of the Maronites, Cyprus, the Reverend Chorbishop Selim Jean Sfeir, currently patriarchal administrator of the same circumscription.
Curriculum vitae
Msgr. Selim Jean Sfeir was born on 2 September 1958 in Keserwan, Lebanon. After studying at the Patriarchal Seminary in Ghazir, he was ordained a priest on 22 May 1988 for the Patriarchal vicariate of Sarba.
He holds a licentiate in theology from the Saint Esprit University in Kasklik, Lebanon, a licentiate in oriental canon law from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome and a doctorate in Utroque iure from the Pontifical Lateran University.
He has served as vicar and then parish priest in Lebanon and Cyprus, as well as judicial vicar and president of the tribunal of the Maronite archieparchy of Cyprus. In October 2020, he was appointed Patriarchal administrator of the same circumscription.
He has edited several publications. He speaks Arabic, French, Italian, English and modern Greek.
