The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Alba Iulia, Romania, presented by Archbishop György-Miklós Jakubínyi.
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the office of auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Alba Iulia, Romania, presented by Bishop József Tamás.
The Pope has appointed as archbishop of the archdiocese of Alba Iulia, Romania, the Reverend Msgr. Gergely Kovács, of the clergy of the same archdiocese, currently office head of the Pontifical Council for Culture.
Reverend Msgr. Gergely Kovács
The Reverend Msgr. Gergely Kovács was born on 21 July 1968 in Târgu Secuiesc, county of Covasna, archdiocese of Alba Iulia.
He attended high school in Târgu Secuiesc until 1987. From 1987 to 1990 he carried out his studies as a seminarian at the Roman Catholic Theological Institute of Alba Iulia.
He was then sent to Rome, where he resided at the Pontifical German-Hungarian College from 1990 to 1996, attending the Pontifical Gregorian University where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in theology in 1992.
He was then awarded a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical Lateran University in 1994 and a doctorate in 1996. At the same time he attended a course in jurisprudence at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
He was ordained a priest on 3 July 1993.
He served as parish vicar in Târgu Mureş from 1996 to 1997, when he entered into the service of the Holy See at the Pontifical Council for Culture, responsible for the German and central-eastern Europe area, and editor of the journal Cultura e Fede. Since 2007 he has held the role of office head in the same Pontifical Council. He collaborates with the Congregation for the Clergy and with the Tribunal of the Roman Rota.
On 24 July 2000 he was named Chaplain of His Holiness.
