Appointment of auxiliary of Québec, Canada
The Holy Father has appointed the Reverend Fr. Martin Laliberté, P.M.E., superior general of the Foreign Missions Society in Québec, as auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Québec, Canada, assigning him the titular see of Sertei.
The Reverend Fr. Martin Laliberté, P.M.E., was born on 13 December 1964 in Charlesbourg in the archdiocese of Québec. He studied pedagogy at the Université Laval of Québec from 1983 to 1987, receiving a diploma. He then spent a year in spiritual formation at the Centre de spiritualité Manrèse in Québec, and subsequently studied at Saint Paul University in Ottawa, where he was awarded a master’s degree in mission sciences.
He was ordained a priest on 28 October 1995, and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Québec. He is a member of the Société des Missions Etrangères.
Before priestly ordination, in the years 1987 to 1989, he was a lay missionary in Haiti. He then had an experience as missionary animator among the young people of the Province of Québec, and from 1996 to 2004 was in mission in Brazil, in the region of Manaus. From 1998 to 2000 he served as president of the presbyteral council of the prelature of Coari, in Brazil.
Upon returning to Canada he was appointed as director of the Centre of Formation for lay missionary candidates.
From 2008 to 2013 he was assistant of the Société des Missions Etrangères and vicar general. On 7 May 2013 he was elected as superior general of the same Société for a five-year term. On 8 June 2018 he was re-elected for a second five-year term.
