Appointment of bishop of Leopoldina, Brazil
The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Edson José Oriolo dos Santos as bishop of Leopoldina, Brazil, transferring him from the titular see of Segia and from the office of auxiliary of Belo Horizonte.
Bishop Edson José Oriolo dos Santos was born on 19 September 1964 in Itajubá, in the archdiocese of Pouso Alegre, State of Minas Gerais. He studied philosophy at the archdiocesan Seminary of Pouso Alegre and theology at the Instituto Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Taubaté. He then obtained his specialization in philosophy at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) and a licentiate in social philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas. In addition, he attended courses in marketing and people management at the Gama Filho University in Rio de Janeiro.
He was ordained to the priesthood on 5 May, 1990 and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Pouso Alegre, where he held the following positions: parish vicar of São Sebastião in São Sebastião da Bela Vista and of São Francisco de Paula in Ouro Fino; professor of philosophy in the archdiocesan seminary; parish priest of Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Borda da Mata; canon professor of the Metropolitan Chapter; promoter of justice of the ecclesiastical tribunal of Pouso Alegre; episcopal vicar for the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation; and parish priest of the Metropolitan Cathedral.
On 15 April 2015 he was appointed as titular bishop of Segia and auxiliary of Belo Horizonte, receiving episcopal ordination the following 11 July.
