Appointment of assessor for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State and of the under-secretary of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State

The Holy Father has appointed as assessor for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State the Reverend Msgr. Luigi Roberto Cona, counsellor of the apostolic nunciature in Italy.

His Holiness has also appointed as under-secretary of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State the Reverend Msgr. Mirosław Stanisław Wachowski, nunciature counsellor at the same Section for Relations with States.

 

The Reverend Msgr. Luigi Roberto Cona was born in Niscemi, Caltanisetta on 10 November 1965. He was ordained a priest on 28 April 1990 and incardinated in Piazza Armerina. He holds a degree in dogmatic theology.

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 2003, and has served in the Pontifical Representations in Panama, Portugal, Cameroon, Morocco, Jordan and Turkey, at the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State and in the apostolic nunciature in Italy.

He knows Spanish, English, Portuguese and French.

 

The Reverend Msgr. Mirosław Stanisław Wachowski was born in Pisz, Poland on 8 May 1970. He was ordained a priest on 15 June 1996 and incardinated in Ełk, Poland. He holds a degree in canon law.

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 2004, and has served in the Pontifical Representations in Senegal, at the International Organizations in Vienna, in Poland, and at the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State.

He knows Italian, English, French and Russian.

 

Appointment of ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences

The Holy Father has appointed as ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences the distinguished Professor Frances Hamilton Arnold, United States of America, lecturer in chemical engineering, bioengineering and biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Professor Frances Hamilton Arnold was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America, on 25 July 1956. She obtained a degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University and, in 1985, a research doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley; she is currently Linus Pauling Professor of chemical engineering, bioengineering and biochemistry at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, where she has taught since 1986. For her innovative research on methods of direct evolution to produce new enzymes in the laboratory, she received the Millennium Technology Prize in 2016 and was awarded, in 2018, the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. She is the co-founder of Gevo. Inc., a company for the production of fuels and chemical products from renewable sources.
