Appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Portoviejo, Ecuador
The Holy Father has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Portoviejo, Ecuador, Bishop Eduardo José Castillo Pino, currently titular of Tarasa of Byzacena and auxiliary of the same archdiocese.
Bishop Eduardo José Castillo Pino
Bishop Eduardo José Castillo Pino was born in Guayaquil on 21 March 1970. He studied in the Sedes Sapientiae major seminary led by the Prelature of Opus Dei, and completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the University of the Holy Cross in Rome. He was ordained a priest on 1 November 1994, and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Guayaquil.
In Rome he obtained a licentiate and doctorate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.
His pastoral offices have included: parish vicar, professor and director of studies at the major seminary of Guayaquil, parish priest and episcopal vicar of the “Santa Elena” Vicariate.
On 14 March 2012 he was appointed as titular bishop of Tarasa of Byzacena and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Portoviejo, receiving episcopal ordination the following 1 June.
He has served as apostolic administrator of Portoviejo since September 2018.
