Summit of Pan American Judges on Social Rights and Franciscan Doctrine

The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences has organized the Summit of Pan American Judges on Social Rights and Franciscan Doctrine from 3 to 4 June 3 to 4 in the Vatican’s Casina Pio IV, to be attended by magistrates of the three Americas, whose competences are part of the effective implementation of social, economic and cultural rights (DESCS).

The summit is the ideal continuation of the First Conference on Social Rights and Franciscan Doctrine, held on 4 June 2018 in the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires, attended by 300 magistrates and judicial officials, to discuss the legal inspiration rooted in the fundamental documents of the Magisterium of Pope Francis.

The objectives of the summit include how to confront the three “Ls” (land, lodgings and labour) [in Spanish, the three “Ts” – terra, techo, trabajo], how to deal with budget constraints and exogenous banking or financial controls based on countries’ external debt, and how to overcome political pressures and create a worldwide movement based on the unrestricted defence of social rights.

During the meeting the magistrates will talk about the progress recorded in their specific tasks that obey the Social Doctrine of the Church and the ad hoc proposals of new legal practices in the courts.

In addition, the summit wishes to consolidate a “Permanent Pan American Board of Judges in Defence of Social Rights” that will be able to coordinate future efforts in the region to optimize judicial policies focused on full respect of social, economic and cultural rights, providing training and courses and setting up committees responsible for the defence of magistrates under pressure, etc.

Pope Francis will speak at the closing ceremony and present a special document on the importance of the theme.

The works will be published by the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences in a special edition and will be distributed worldwide, serving as a theoretical basis for a future world meeting of judges on social, economic and cultural rights and Franciscan Doctrine.

CHARIS, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal International Service, will begin its journey on 9 June, Sunday of Pentecost. On the same day the ICCRS and Catholic Fraternity will cease to exist, since the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life established in December 2018 a new single service for the current of grace of Catholic Charismatic Renewal, naming it CHARIS.

The aim of CHARIS is to awaken communion between all these realities at national, continental and global level, and its statute emphasizes the importance of spreading the grace of baptism in the spirit, work for the unity of Christians, service to the poor and participation in the evangelizing mission of the whole Church.

On the occasion of its initiation, from 6 to 7 June CHARIS will hold an international conference in Rome for the leaders of Catholic Charismatic Renewal, to be attended by more than 550 people participate. On 8 June Pope Francis will address a message to charismatics throughout the world and on Sunday 9, all those responsible for the Charismatic Renewal will attend the Holy Mass for Pentecost in Saint Peter’s Square.
