Appointment of bishop of Tete, Mozambique

The Holy Father Francis has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Tete, Mozambique, the Rev. Fr. Diamantino Guapo Antunes, I.M.C., currently regional superior of the Consolata Missionary Institute in Mozambique and Angola.

Rev. Fr. Diamantino Guapo Antunes, I.M.C.

The Rev. Fr. Diamantino Guapo Antunes, I.M.C., was born on 30 November 1966, in Albergaria dos Doze, in the district of Leiria, Portugal. He studied philosophy at the Catholic University of Lisbon (1985-1988) and theology in Rome, at the Pontifical Urban University (1989-1992). He made his perpetual profession on 19 September 1993 in Maua, Mozambique. He was ordained a deacon on 5 December 1993 in Cuamba, Mozambique, receiving priestly ordination at Fatima on 20 July 1994.

He obtained a licentiate in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University (1994-1997), serving also as vice formator, and a doctorate in the same subject at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1997-1999).

He then held the following offices: local superior and parish priest of the Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Mepenhira (Mozambique, diocese of Lichinga, 1999-2002); local superior, parish priest of Nossa Senhora da Fátima in Mecanhelas and of Entre Lagos (diocese of Lichinga, 2002-2005); provincial advisor in Mozambique (2005-2008); local superior and parish priest of Nova Mambone (diocese of Inhambane, 2005-2007); parish priest of Santa Isabel in Guiúa (2007-2014), head of the Catechetical Centre (diocese of Inhambane 2007-2014); episcopal vicar for pastoral ministry of the diocese of Inhambane (2007-2014); regional superior of the Consolata Missionary Institute in Mozambique and Angola (since 2014); and superior of the I.M.C. Community in Angola (from 2017). He is also postulator of the cause of beatification of the Catechists Martyrs of Guiúa.
