Resignation of the bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda, Brazil, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation of the bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda, Brazil, presented by H.E. Msgr. Francesco Biasin.

The Pope has appointed as bishop of Barra do Piraí-Volta Redonda, Brazil, H.E. Msgr. Luiz Henrique da Silva Brito, currently titular bishop of Zallata and auxiliary of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro.

H.E. Msgr. Luiz Henrique da Silva Brito

S.E. Mons. Luiz Henrique da Silva Brito was born on 19 May 1967 in São Gonçalo, in the archdiocese of Niterói, in the State of Rio de Janeiro.

He carried out his studies in philosophy in the Paulo VI seminary of Nova Iguaçu (1986) and in the São José seminary of Rio de Janeiro (1987), and in theology in the Institute of Theology of the archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro (1987-1990). He then obtained a licentiate in canon law from the Higher Institute of Canon Law in Rio de Janeiro (1991-1992) and a licentiate in moral theology from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome (2003-2005).

On 14 December 1991 he received priestly ordination and was incardinated in the diocese of Campos, in which he has held the following offices: parish administrator of São Sebastião in Campos; parish priest of the parishes of Santo Antônio de Pádua, Santa Helena and São Benedito; diocesan coordinator of pastoral ministry; judge auditor; spiritual director of the Maria Imaculada diocesan seminary; diocesan chancellor; moderator of the diocesan curia; and member of the presbyteral council and the college of consultors. In addition, he has served as defender of the bond in the Interdiocesan Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Niterói and professor in the Faculty of Philosophy of Campos and in the archiepiscopal seminary of Niterói.

On 29 February 2012 he was appointed as titular bishop of Zallata and auxiliary of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, receiving episcopal ordination the subsequent 12 May.
