Appointment of auxiliary of Lisboa, Portugal
The Pope has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the patriarchate of Lisboa, Portugal, the Rev. Can. Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar, of the clergy of the diocese of Porto, currently director of the National Secretariat of Church Social Communications and president of the administrative board of Rádio Renascença in Lisbon, assigning him the titular see of Dagno.
Rev. Can. Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar
The Rev. Can. Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar was born on 12 December 1973 in Leça do Balio, in the municipality of Maia, district and diocese of Porto.
After completing middle school, he entered the philosophical seminary of Ermesinde. He then attended the major seminary of the diocese of Porto, completing the course in theology at the Portuguese Catholic University, Porto section. Several years later (2014) he obtained a master’s degree in communication sciences from the Portuguese Catholic University, at the central seat of Lisbon.
He was ordained a priest on 8 July 2001, and incardinated in the diocese of Porto, where he held the following roles: parish priest of São Pedro de Azevedo, in the outskirts of Porto (2001); special secretary to the bishop of Porto, H.E. Msgr. Armindo Lopes Coelho; and parish priest in solidum of the Cathedral (2002), and vicar general (2004-2006).
He is currently president of the administrative board of Rádio Renascença, located in Lisbon. In the diocese of Porto he performs various pastoral services (social communication, assistance to Catholic scouts, chaplain of Mercy, vice rector of the Shrine of Saint Rita, rector/president of the Irmandade dos Clérigos and spiritual assistant of the Equipas de Nossa Senhora. Since 2017 he has also served as national director of the Secretariat of Church Social Communications, and head of the Episcopal Commission for Culture, Cultural Assets and Social Communications.
