The Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the apostolic vicariate of Reyes, Bolivia, presented by H.E. Msgr. Carlos Bürgler, C.SS.R.

 

Appointment of the metropolitan archbishop of Philadelphia of the Ukrainians, U.S.A.

The Pope has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Philadelphia of the Ukrainians, United States of America, H.E. Msgr. Borys Gudziak, transferring him from the eparchy of Saint Vladimir-Le-Grand de Paris of the Ukrainians, France.

H.E. Msgr. Borys Gudziak

H.E. Msgr. Borys Gudziak was born in Syracuse, New York, United States of America, on 24 November 1960. After completing his studies at the Christian Brothers Academy, he graduated in philosophy and biology. He entered the Santa Sofia College in Rome, as a pupil of the archieparchy of Lviv, attended the Pontifical Urban University, and in 1983 he completed his studies in theology.

In 1992, he moved to Lviv where he founded the Institute of Church History, later becoming its dean. Cardinal Lubachivsky, archbishop of Lviv of the Ukrainians, appointed him in 1993 as chairman of the commission for the renewal of the Lviv Theological Academy. Since 2000 he has been rector of the same and later rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University of Lviv.

He was ordained a priest on 26 November 1998 in the church of St. George, and incardinated in the archieparchy of Lviv of the Ukrainians.

On 21 July 2012 he was appointed as apostolic exarch for Ukrainian faithful of the Byzantine rite resident in France, and received episcopal ordination on 26 August 2012. On 19 January 2013, the Holy Father Benedict XVI elevated the apostolic exarchate to the rank of eparchia, assigning the title of “Saint-Vladimir-le-Grand de Paris des Ukrainiens Byzantins” to the new circumscription, and appointed him as first eparchial bishop by transferring him from the head office of Carcabia.

The Holy Father appointed as apostolic administrator sede vacante of the eparchy of Saint Vladimir-Le-Grand de Paris of the Ukrainians, France, H.E. Msgr. Hlyb Borys Sviatoslav Lonchyna. bishop of the eparchy of Holy Family of London of the Ukrainians, Great Britain.

H.E. Msgr. Kyr Hlyb Borys Sviatoslav Lonchyna

H.E. Msgr. Kyr Hlyb Borys Sviatoslav Lonchyna was born on 23 February 1954 in Steubenville, Ohio, United States of America. In 1975 he entered the monastery of the Ukrainian Studite Monks of Grottaferrata, where he gave his perpetual vows on 19 December 1976.

He received priestly ordination on 3 July 1977.

He attended the Pontifical Urban University where he obtained a licentiate in biblical theology, as well as the Pontifical Oriental Institute, graduating in Eastern liturgical theology in 2001. On 11 January 2002 he was nominated by John Paul II as titular bishop of Bareta and auxiliary of Lviv of the Ukrainians. He was consecrated on 27 February 2002. On 14 January 2003 he was appointed as apostolic visitator for the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic faithful in Italy and procurator of the major archbishop in Rome. Since 4 March 2004 he has held the office of apostolic visitator also in Spain and Ireland.

On 25 March 2006, he returned to Ukraine, with the task of following consecrated life, while maintaining the role of apostolic visitator in Italy, Spain and Ireland until 2009. On 2 June of that year he was appointed as apostolic administrator of the see of the apostolic exarchate for the Ukrainian faithful of Byzantine rite resident in Great Britain, of which on 14 June 2011 he became apostolic exarch and, on 18 January 2013, first eparchial bishop.
