Resignation of archbishop of Saint John’s Newfoundland, Canada, and appointment of successor

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Saint John’s Newfoundland, Canada, presented by H.E. Msgr. Martin William Currie.

The Holy Father has appointed as archbishop of the archdiocese of Saint John’s Newfoundland, Canada, H.E. Msgr. Peter Joseph Hundt, currently bishop of Corner Brook and Labrador.

H.E. Msgr. Peter Joseph Hundt

H.E. Msgr. Peter Joseph Hundt was born on 26 August 1956 in Hanover, Ontario. He completed his studies at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1978, and then at “Saint Peter’s Seminary” in London, Ontario, where he was conferred the Master of Divinity in 1981.

He was ordained a priest on 8 May 1982 for the diocese of Hamilton.

From 1982 to 1985 he held the post of parish vicar in the parish "St. Eugene's "from Hamilton. In 1987 he obtained a License in Canon Law in Rome, at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum). Subsequently, he was Vice Chancellor for two years and Chancellor for five in the diocese of Hamilton. In 1994 he became parish priest of "Holy Cross" in Georgetown, Ontario.

On 11 February 2006, Msgr. Hundt was appointed as auxiliary bishop of Toronto, and consecrated on 25 April.

On 1 March 2011 he was appointed as bishop of Corner Brook and Labrador, a diocese he has governed for over 7 years.

Within the Episcopal Conference of Canada, Msgr. Hundt is the representative for the Atlantic Region and member of the “Canadian Catholic Aboriginal Council”. In addition, he is vice president of the “Atlantic Episcopal Assembly”.

 

Appointment of bishop of Apucarana, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of Apucarana, Brazil, H.E. Msgr. Carlos José de Oliveira, of the clergy of the archdiocese of Botucatu, currently vicar general and parish priest of the Nossa Senhora da Piedade Shrine in Lençóis Paulista.

H.E. Msgr. Carlos José de Oliveira

H.E. Msgr. Carlos José de Oliveira was born on 17 October 1967 in Botucatu, in the archdiocese of the same name, in the State of São Paulo. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the “Nossa Senhora da Assunção” Pontifical Faculty in São Paulo. He then obtained a licentiate in moral theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome (1996) and a doctorate in dogmatic theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (2016).

On 4 October 1992 he was ordained a priest, and was incardinated in the diocese of Mogi das Cruzes, where he has held the following offices: parish administrator of “Nossa Senhora da Paz” in Mogi das Cruzes (1992-1994); rector of the preparatory seminary (1992-1994); coordinator of vocational ministry (1992-1994); secretary of the presbyteral council (1992-1994).

In 1996 he was incardinated in Botucatu, his archdiocese of origin, where he performed the following functions: archdiocesan counsellor for Family Pastoral Care (1997-1999 and 2002-2007); head of information for the archdiocesan (1999-2005); archdiocesan pastoral care coordinator (2001-2009); executive secretary for pastoral care for the ecclesiastical province of Botucatu (2003-2005); coordinator of the Second Archdiocesan Eucharistic Congress (2008); coordinator of the presbyteral council (2001-2007); member of the Training Council (since 2001); professor at the Theological Institute of the “João Paulo II”Faculty of the ecclesiastical province of Botucatu, in Marília (since 1997).

On 4 October 2007 he was listed among the chaplains of His Holiness.

He is currently vicar general (since 2016), pastor-rector of the “Nossa Senhora da Piedade” Shrine in Lençóis Paulista (since 1996) and member of the presbyteral council and the college of consultors.

 

Appointment of bishop of Armenia, Colombia

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Armenia, Colombia, H.E. Msgr. Carlos Arturo Quintero Gómez, of the clergy of the same diocese, currently diocesan administrator of Armenia.

H.E. Msgr. Carlos Arturo Quintero Gómez

H.E. Msgr. Carlos Arturo Quintero Gómez was born on 3 August 1967 in Armenia, Quindío. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at the major seminary of Manizales, then  carried out his specialist studies in communications at the Pontifical Bolivarian University of Medellín, and in psychology at the “Universidad Católica del Norte” in Medellín. He was ordained a priest in Armenia on 4 December 1993.

He has served as co-director of diocesan pastoral care for young people (1994-1995); director of the diocesan journal and director of the diocesan department for communications (1994-1997, 2002-2007); professor in the major seminary (since 2001), professor of the Theological Institute of Pastoral Care of Latin America (ITEPAL); parish vicar of the Cathedral (2002-2011); parish administrator and parish priest in various parishes (since 2011); episcopal vicar (2002-2007); secretary of the CELAM Communications Department (2007-2011); and deputy coordinator of the Information Network for the Latin American Church (RIIAL). Since 2012 he has been vicar general, parish priest of the Cathedral, academic director of the Institute of Theology and Pastoral Care of Armenia, and formator at the diocesan major seminary. Since December 2017 he has served as diocesan administrator of Armenia.

 

Appointment of bishop of São João del Rei, Brazil

The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of the diocese of São João del Rei, Brazil, H.E. Msgr. José Eudes Campos do Nascimento, transferring him from the diocese of Leopoldina.

H.E. Msgr. José Eudes Campos do Nascimento was born on 30 April 1966 in Barbacena, in the archdiocese of Mariana, State of Minas Gerais. He completed his studies in philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy of the Salesian Fathers in São João del Rei (1988) and at the “Santo Tomás de Aquino” Institute of Philosophy in Belo Horizonte (1989-1990). He studied theology at the “São José” major seminary of the archdiocese of Mariana (1991-1994).

He received priestly ordination on 22 April 1995 and was incardinated in the archdiocese of Mariana, where he has held the following positions: parish vicar of “Nossa Senhora da Conceição” in Congonhas-MG; parish priest of the parishes of “São Gonçalo do Amarante” in Catas Altas da Noruega-MG, of “Nossa Senhora do Rosário” in Rio Pomba-MG and of “Santa Efigênia” in Ouro Preto-MG; archdiocesan counsellor for youth ministry; spiritual director of the major seminary; member of the presbyteral council and of the college of consultors; representative of the priests of the archdiocese in regional and national ecclesial bodies; and episcopal vicar.

On 27 June 2012 he was appointed as bishop of Leopoldina and received episcopal ordination on the following 15 September.

 

Appointment of auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, Canada

The Holy Father has appointed as auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Alexandria-Cornwall, currently united “in person episcopis” to the archdiocese of Ottawa, Canada, the Rev. Fr. Guy Desrochers, C.Ss.R., spiritual assistant at the Shrine of Anne-de-Beaupré and preacher of Spiritual Retreats in Canada and in the United States, assigning him the titular see of Melzi.

The Rev. Father Guy Desrochers was born on 23 May 1956 in Hull, Québec, in the current archdiocese of Gatineau. He completed his secondary studies at the Collège Saint-Alexandre des Pères du Saint-Esprit in Limbour and obtained his specialization in fine arts and commercial arts at the Algonquin College in Ottava. From 1972 to 1979 he was “caricaturist” for Ottawa’s Le Droit newspaper.

In August 1983 he entered the novitiate of the Redemptorist Fathers at Sainte-Anne-de Baupré. He made his temporary profession on 7 August 1984 and gave his perpetual vows on 29 August 1987.

In the years 1982-1983 he studied philosophy at the Saint-Augustin de Cap-Rouge Seminary in Québec, and theology from 1984 to 1989 at the Laval University, obtaining the Baccalaureate. He then completed a two-year internship in the archdiocese of Montréal. On 7 January 1989 he was ordained a priest in Hull in the Redemptorist Province of Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré.

From 1989 to 1995 he was responsible for a small missionary team composed of four Redemptorists in the diocese of Gaspé. From 1995 to 1998 he was superior of Aylmer, in the diocese of Gatineau-Hull. In the years 1998-2005 he exercised his ministry at the Shrine of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and bursar.

From 2005 until 2008 he was appointed as superior of the Saint-Redempteur Pavilion of Saint-Augustin-Des-Desmaures, host house for retreats for ecclesial groups. From 2008 to 2011 Director of the Revue Sainte-Anne and animator of the same shrine. From 2011 until 2015 he served as rector of the Shrine of Sainte-Anne and superior of the International Community providing spiritual service at the Shrine. Finally, since 2015 he has assisted in the ministry at the Shrine and served as preacher of Retreats in Canada and the United States.
