Resignation of archbishop of Caracas, Venezuela, and appointment of apostolic administrator sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the same archdiocese

The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the archdiocese of Caracas, Venezuela, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino.

The Pope has appointed as apostolic administrator sede vacante et ad nutum Sanctae Sedis of the archdiocese of Caracas, Venezuela, His Eminence Cardinal Baltazar Enrique Porras Cardozo, archbishop of Mérida, Venezuela.

 

Appointment of military ordinary for Great Britain

The Holy Father has appointed as military ordinary for Great Britain H.E. Msgr. Paul James Mason, transferring him from the titular see of Skálholt and from the office of auxiliary of the archdiocese of Southwark.

H.E. Msgr. Paul James Mason

H.E. Msgr. Paul James Mason was born in North Shields, in the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, England, on 6 November 1962. From 1986 to 1992 he held various professional roles. He entered the seminary in 1992 as a student of the Venerable English College in Rome. He obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University.

On 25 July 1998 he was ordained a priest for the archdiocese of Southwark. He has carried out the following ministries: parish vicar, part-time chaplain at the Military Cadets of Terra, chaplain at the Hospitals of Saint Thomas and Guys in London, part-time secondary school chaplain, pastoral coordinator and educator at the seminary of Allen Hall, director of permanent formation of the clergy of the archdiocese of Southwark, and episcopal vicar for Kent.

On 23 April 2016 he was appointed as titular bishop of Skálholt and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Southwark, receiving episcopal ordination on the following 31 May.

He holds a bacherlor’s degree in languages and European institutions, a licentiate in philosophy and a master’s degree in medical ethics.
