Appointment of the bishop of Szombathely, Hungary
The Holy Father has appointed as bishop of Szombathely, Hungary, His Excellency Msgr. János Székely, currently titular bishop of Febiana and auxiliary of Esztergom-Budapest.
Msgr. János Székely
Msgr. János Székely was born on 7 June 1964 in Budapest. He studied in Rome at the Biblical Institute, obtaining a licentiate (1993-1996). Upon returning to his homeland, he obtained a degree in theology from the Theological Faculty of the Catholic University of Budapest.
He subsequently held the following offices: deputy priest in Budapest-Érzsébetváros (1996-1998), parish priest in Budapest-Széphalom (1998-2001), spiritual director in the Central Seminary of Budapest (2001-2005), rector of the Church of Perpetual Adoration in Budapest (2005-2006), and pastor of the parish of St. Anne in Esztergom (2006-2007).
In addition, from 1997 to 2000 he was a lecturer in the faculty of theology of the Catholic University, and since 2006 he has served as rector of the Higher School of Theology of Esztergom. Since 2007 he has been episcopal vicar for social and cultural issues and teaching in the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest.
On 14 November 2007 he was appointed as titular bishop of Febiana and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, and received episcopal ordination on 5 January 2008. Within the Episcopal Conference he has served as president of the Caritas in veritate Commission, head of pastoral care of gypsy people, and director of the National Institute of Missionary Formation for Gypsies.
