Appointment of metropolitan archbishop of Londrina, Brazil
The Holy Father has appointed as metropolitan archbishop of Londrina, Brazil, His Excellency Msgr. Geremias Steinmetz, currently bishop of Paranavaí.
Msgr. Geremias Steinmetz
Msgr. Geremias Steinmetz was born on 26 February 1965 in Sulina, in the diocese of Palmas-Francisco Beltrão, state of Paraná. After his higher studies in the São João Maria Vianey Seminary in Palmas, he studied philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy of Palmas, and theology at the Instituto Teologico Santa Catarina (ITESC) in Florianópolis. He then obtained a licentiate in sacred liturgy from the Pontifical St. Anselm Athenaeum in Rome (1995-1997).
He received priestly ordination on 9 February 1991 and was incardinated in the diocese of Palmas-Francisco Beltrão, in which he held the following offices: parish vicar of the Senhor Bom Jesus Cathedral (1991-1993); parish priest of Nossa Senhora Aparecida in Palmas (1993-1995) and of Cristo Rei in Francisco Beltrão (1998-2001); and rector of the diocesan seminary of philosophy (2002-2006). From 2006 to 2010 he was vicar general, member of the College of Consulters and the Presbyteral Council, and coordinator of Evangelizing Action. In addition, he served as professor at the Institute of Theology of the archdiocese of Cascavel (1999-2010).
On 5 January he was appointed as bishop of Paranavaí and received episcopal consecration on 25 March. Within the Brazilian Episcopal Conference he is member of the Permanent Council and vice-president of the Regional Sul 2 (state of Paraná).
